Score Is Is to 6. | * after q lapse OF some n1teen years, the stalwarts from the / University OF Virginia got a decision nv margin of one touchdown over | the groups representing the State | University of Georgia Saturday aft | ernoon at Ponce DeLeon. The score vas 10 to 6, Virginia making one goal from touchdown in two attempts. while Georgia blew her only chance FOR an additional point from this source by failing to make a fair | latch on the punt Briefly stated the much mo0ted | forward pass proved the deciding fac tor in the game In fact, this medunn Of attack really produced the only scores Of the game, having been directly responsible for two touch downs, one by Virginia and one BY Georgia, and making possible the third and deciding score for the Wis tors. But for a swift, sharp shoot Of the ball from Gooch to White with in the last four minutes Of play, the | Georgia team would have had the opportunity Of doing a joy dance / through the streets Of the city Sat urday night, prompted by the salts faction Of having held the strong | Virginia team to tie score, In the face of what were considered big / odds. Powell Returns Ball IS Yards. Shortly after the opening of hos ulities the outlook developed a de- | cided indigo tinge for supporters Of | the Red and Black. After receiving the kickoff on his own 5-yard line, Powell for Georgia hustled back to his 20-yard line, where he was 4 downed Bob McWhorter was ~ trusted with the task of chopping off for Georgia the first advance against The Virginians. His effort went for 1 nothing, but he came back with g. ard advance on his second attempt, 1 only to have it taken away and a / penalty OF fifteen yards assessed for / the offense of holding committed by 4 teammate. The goal line was only a few wards away, and Big John Hen derson was called on to boot the ball Up the field tumble Checks Virginia March. After allowing for a nice return by 4 Gooch, a distance of 40 yards re- / NAMED between Virginia and the goal behind the standard bearers of the Red and Black. Then Virginia began a mad rush that BODIED evil for Geor- gia hopes. Mayer and Landes drove | through the Georgia tackles for sub . stantial gains, it and looked as though the Orange and Blue was due Tor | touchdown in short order. A tumble IA ,hecked the march temporarily ana / Virginia found it necessary to resort 1 10 a forward pass Logan intercepted the shot almost Of his own goal line, but managed | to twist forward far enough to avert / q safety. Bob McWhorter gave Geor- 4 gia supporters their first occasion FOR genuine demonstration shortly hereafter, clipping off IA yards past | Virginia’s left flank A few further / attempts were successfully checked | by the Virginians, and Henderson again booted, sending the gall Wen | INTO Virginia territory, the first time | il had been there since Gooch llfted | IL from a high tee on the kck-off. Battle or Even Terms. The battle ragged back and forth from that point on, without either | side gaining any material advantage / until less than one minute before / time was called for the first quarter. At that point Virginia had worked the /, ball to Georgia’s IL yards by series A Of short, steady gains. Working / from “a regular formation, forward pass was manipulated from Landes 4 20 Gillette, who had crossed the line | for the first score of the game. Inc / | cuted The second quarter found the ball / In Georgia’s possession on her 80 | yard line, where it had been placed | by Powell after a nice return OF Gooch’s kick off just before the first | period closed McWhorter tore | through the right wing of the Wis tors for one of the runs for which he is famous in these parts, netting gain of 20 yards before ne was forced out of bounds. From that point on it was see saw affair until a few minutes. of the close Of the second quarter. BY series Of short gains the Red and Black edged the ball down into Vlrginia territory until they had reached he l2-yard line. At this point Nc fWhorter spun a swift shoot to Lo- .fgan, who had reached the Virginlans yard line, from where the tow headed end dashed across for touchdown, tying the score. The play was almost identical with me one pulled by Virginia, and marked The second prominence of the for ward heave. On the punt-out the shot was low and the Virg, nians rushed through and prevented a catch. The Geofsans thereby lost a chance for try | al goal, and consequently the opporunity to gain the lead, From that point on but little advantage appeared for either team until near the CIoSe OF the game. Both squads were N”orNng with vengeance, and the result was very near a stand-off. V’rginians Break Loose. however, near the close Of the .VuTth quarter, when many had be- Gun to settle down to the realization u’dt the Georgians had held the hmgnly Virginians to a tie, things ssf9ke loose back behind that power u rush line CARRIED in blue jerseys ,.Doed about the sleeve with strips of with the ball well down in Georgia ,s’Ftoiy Captain McWohter made s”o heroic efforts to rush it out of SSehser Quarterback Paddock. no o1ul’ figuring that If once he could iHaNe his interference shoot big Bob s ,I,9 an open field, it would be flowers u SLOW music from the gladiators Ciu the Old Dominion. A. and M. Eleven Totally Outclassed VIRGINIA BARELY , DEFEATS GEORGIA Vgina’s Much Touted Strength Failed Develop-Geor gians Outweighed Considerably Winning Score Made in Final Quarter--Bob McWhorter Star of Game Atlanta, October 5-fSpecial)-virginia’s much touted strength did not develop this afternoon. and they were just barely able to nose out a 10 to victory OF the Georgia eleven. Georgia was outweighed 16 pounds to the man. and in the line there was DIFF ference of 90 pounds in favor of the yirsinia eleven, yet the lighter Georgia for wards were repeatedly out charged by their. heavier opponents. Only by resorting to the forward pass were the Virginia boys able to shove across their victory. Even with their added weight, they did not have the final punch 10 send over the touchdown when they needed it. Several times during the game the heavier Virginia eleven would rush the ball for substantial gains, but when they would get within the shadow of Georgia s goal posts, the latter would buck up and fighting fiercely repel all attacks on the line or the attempts at circling the ends. Georgia’s Showing a Surprise The showing of the Georgia team was a surprise to every one at the game. and thcJ ueepcu Sicdit dpul thcAiociscS ny the manner in which they fought.
