VIRGINIA OUTPLAYS VANDERBILT. $40 Splendid Attack and Defense by Orange and Blue Battles Rivals. HhY AND GOOCH SHOW H!GH-CLASS FORM C0mmodores Missed Their Best Lineman, But Were Also OutcIassed. Special Dispatch TO The Star. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Nov. l. Virginia surpassed all expectations on Lambeth Field this afternoon when they beat Vanderbilt by a score of “a to two points more than the University of Michigan made against the same team a week ago. The commodores never had q look-in and never got within the Orange and Blue thirty yard line until just before the game ended, when Bench brought it to their 10-yard mark after run of Z yards. They fumbled. however on the next down and Ray punted out of danger Virginia’s attack was unusually strong and after the first quarter they had little trouble in making the necessary ground for first down. Vanderbilt wa crippled to some extent 1t is true, by the absence of her best lineman, but one player could hardly have made a ma terial difference in the outcome. Tn, Virginia team and students have been confident of the result for some time but never hoped TO win by more tnal fourteen points, much less holding thu visitors scoreless. Fanderbilt’s forwards were simply out classed and slightly outweighed and Vanderbilts backs were carrying the bal Voolfolk. Carter and Maiden broke through time after time until finally Quarterback Bench tried nothing but for ward passes and trick plays, which rarely We’re successful Used Poor Judgment. They seemed to use poor judgment in the use of the pass. attempting the play five or six times when within their own E-yard line. and these plays were directly responsible for two of yirginia’s touch downs. Ray and Gooch, in TIN, Orange and Blue backfield. played as IL their lives depended on the outcome, and it seemed impossible TO stop them. The foEmer with his cross bucks and the latter running from a kick formation carried the ball from one end of the field to the other, and then Ray would be pushed over for the score. Landes and Randolph were always ON the watch for forward passes and between them cap tured six OF Vandys efforts before tie ball had touched the ground On the other hand. Virginia was rather successful with the play after falling at the first few attempts A long pass from Gooch to White that went through McQueen’s arms paved the way for the touchdown that sent the home team on its forward march The game was exceptionally clean and only one offender for roughness had to be removed from the contest. Mcqueen was the player, and Cohn had to replace him at right half In the early part of the sec ond period. Il was question of pretty defensive foot ball throughout the first period and neither team got within scoring distance before the whistle blew for the first inter mission They seemed to be about evenly matched when it came to punting ability but Gooch had something on his opposing quarterback In running the kicks back Both teams tried several forward passes in this quarter, but all went wild Virginia started things early In the second period and scored three times before it was over. Mayer kicked off to Skies, who returned the ball yards. and Curlip was forced to punt after one try at virginia’s line. An exchange of punts gave Virginia the ball on Vanderbilt’s 40 lard line. from which point Gooch execut ed long pass to White. putting the bal on the l5-yard line Ray went through the line for couple and Voolfolk, or trick play, put the ball near the goal line. from which point Ray carried II over. Gooch caught the punt-out and Carter kicked an easy goal. Vanderbilt elected to receive and May ar kicked of TO the Commodores’ 25-yarc line. Curtin punted 30 yards outside. and Virginia started down the field again After plunges by Ray and Landes Maid. en- threw the ball over the goal line into Woolfolk’s arm, and Carter added the fourteenth point with a goal. Virginia Triumphs Over Vanderbilt, Eleven, “a to 0 CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. Nov. /. Virginia defeated Vandy by score Of “a to 0 here to-day A cleaner whittier game was never seen on Lam beth Field. While 1t was only too apparent that Virginia outplayed her opponents from the beginning Of the game until the end, the Wander bilt eleven put up a gritty and won derful fight, cOntesting every inch of ground. The game was characterized by the beautiful execution of Virginias forward passes, which made possible most Of the touchdownS. In the first half Vandy failed to execute even one successful forward pass. Only three times did Vandy make her yards on downs, and a single successful forward pass of 4 yards was made in the second half. The gritty and pretty playing of Morgan. the Commodores’ center, was very no ticeable in the first half. Credit should be given to Boeusch, the lively Vandy quarter, whose excellent management Of his team kept them from being scored on oftener. The line plunging OF Ray,l Virginia’s smashing back, was a feature. The beautiful broken field work of Virginia’s quarter, Gooch, coupled with the constant gains of Landes, Virgin las half, were what took the ball over the line so many times. Coach War rem, of Virginia, said that he was we’ll pleased with the showing Of his men, but it was no more than he expected lie considered the teamwork was considerably better than the display In Atlanta last Saturday After the game was over the crowd ed Virginia sections of the grand stand went wild and waving of col ors, straw seats and hats The stu dent body filed out on the field and formed the Virginia “V.” The air was rent with cheers for both elev-
