PRINCETON PLAYS SOME REAL” FOOTBALL Toys with Fordham. Scoring Touchdown After Touch. down at Will. WHOLE SQUAD HAS A TRY Freak Play Begins Game STREET Scores Four Times for Tigers-Law Also a Star. Princeton, y. j., Oct. 4-Thirty Princeton football players had hand in running UP 4 score OF co TO against Fordham here this afternoon. The real football that Andrews promised from his players was not long in making it’s appearance after the opening whistle had blown, and after the first period the Tigers toyed with their opponents, while practically avery man on the squad had a trial exsept Captain Baker, who was held to the side lines The game was too one-sided 20 be called good football even for the victors. for they had practically no opposition 10 either bring out or take advantage OF their faults. They simply scored. Sixty nine does not total all that the Tigers ought to have had, for three times In tho third period alone they pushed their way over the goal line. only to lose the credit. twice on penalties and once on tumble by Law, after he had crossed the chalk mark, and the game ended with the ball in their possession on the 6-yard line lacking just one play Of a touchdown, for they had advanced without hesitation to that point. So little opposition was offered by the Bronx team that the Princeton quarter backs did not have TO pick their best plays, but called of any on their list. Neither open play nor straight line attack was favored, but good mixture was the programme, with tackle plays perhaps the greatest fayorite. Fordham, on the other hand, found dif fculty in locating a single soft spot in the Tigers line, and resorted to open play entirely. giving a weird succession OF at tempted followed passes from trick for nations. A freak play. which brought TO mind de Wits much discussed drop kick against Dartmouth TWO years ago, started the game. Law had Immediately returned the first kickoff by punting with the wind. The ball rolled TO Fordham’s 5-yard line, and the Maroon players were unable to move It a foot by rushing, so Robin was called on for a punt. He misjudged the wind. and his punt was carried up almost straight over his head When ii fell II bounded back over the goal line before being touched by either team. Vivlano fell on the ball before Prince ton player could get TO il, and the argurant started. After long conference the officials judged It a safety. and put the ball in play in Fordhams possession or the 20-yard line. Whiting, OF Cornell. the referee. explained after the game that this ruling had been made because the officials considered that 1t was Fordham’s own kick that had furnished the motive power that sent the ball back Of the line. No rule fully covered the play. The most noticeable improvement in the playing of Princeton over that of last week against Rutgers was in the Interior ence. on every kickoff a wedge was formed in front OF the runner that sew eral times gave him time to recover tumble and run the ball well up toward Fordham’s territory before being dovned. on the shift plays the interference seemed 10 get started with a snap that was ire sstible, and cross bucks proved disastrous for the visitors. Not one OF the backs, whether a substitute or not failed to make some play that in any other game would have been brilliant. Brad” STREET. played the stellar role for the Tigers by scoring Is OF the % points on four touchdowns and four goals from touchdowns. lie ploughed up the centre OF the Maroon line for steady advances of from five to fifteen yards nearly every time he was called up. IL was STREET. who furnished the final push when ever Fordham threatened to hold. Merritt. Borden and Law all made long runs, and did some clever lodging Merrift scored in the last quarter on forty flve-yard run. starting from a fake followed pass and again IN the same period he broke through tackle for twenty yards. but fumbled when tackled In the shadow OF the goal posts. and Love carried u across for touchdown. Borden scored from the 25-yard line on splendid broken field running. The forward pass was much used In the closing half of the game by both sides, total of ten attempts being made. A triple pass ending in forward pass tried by Fordham, was the most intricate play of the game. but 1t failed. The Tigers were more fortunate and worked several masses. one, from Gillespie to Doolittls’ good for IS yards and the last touchdo”n’ TAYLOR made Fordham’s nearest APP proach to scoring in the third period, “heh he gathered in Laws tumble back OF the goal line and went the length OF the he’u through the whole Tiger lineup. but was called back by the officials for runnih9 out of bounds on the 20-yard line. The lineup follows:
