YALE MEETS A TARTAR Finds Washington and Jefferson a Hard Nut to Crack. FLYNN AGAIN MAN OF HOUR Scores Yale’s First Touchdown -Pennsylvanians Make a Fine Field Goal. contested game here to-day by a score OF 10 to 3, the visitors scoring on a remarkedly good place kick from the &C. yard line at hard angle by Patterson, their giant guard. The game was important for Yale as an indication of what the Individual play ers could do and as evidence as to how the future policy OF the coaches must be shaped. On the whole. the game was Giscouraging from the Yale point Of view. The Yale attack seems to be a one-man AFFAIR, so far as scoring goes, and that man Is Flynn. While he was in the game Yale scored one touchdown and was twice in position 10 score again, but was held for downs both times within the Washington and Jefferson l0-yard line. The other touchdown was largely the result Of good luck. Washington and Jefferson had been extremely successful with the forward pass, and after working It for several long gains the Yale forwards broke through in the second period and swarmed around Goodwin. The latter’s pass was blocked, Galauer grabbed the ball and, with clear field ahead OF him, ran TWEEN ty-seven yards TO the Washington ls-yard line before Goodwin caught him from behind. Yale scored after a fine plunge by Pumpelly. In the second half Yale not only failed to score, but was not even in position TO score. Pumpelly once tried a drop kick from the 3l-yard line, and failed. II was a poor pass and a hurried attempt, but was beautiful kick, that barely missed a score Yale’s plays, as expected, depended al most wholly on power and speed. The forward pass was tried only twice by Yale, once a long pass OF thirty yards, Camp to Avery, on which the latter bare ly got the tips OF his fingers. and failed. Again Yale tried the pass on shift play, In which the whole interference ran toward the side lines before the pass was attempted. The visitors forced the game through out in the second half and gave Yale all II could handle. Toward the close Of the game Patterson tried two more place kicks, but failed. At least one OF them should have been good. as Young made fair catch OF a short high punt by Camp on the Yale 0-yard line, but Pat. terson missed fairly easy attempt. The other one was long attempt from scrImmage at midfeld by the same player. Without Flynn, Yale was lacking in Of fensive strength in the second half. The Blue had a few new plays on the at tack, one OF which was successful. 1t was a shift in which the two ends lined UP behind the guards and jumped 10 either side OF the line just before the ball was passed. With this formation Yale pulled on many successful line plunges or end runs Defensiyely Yale showed strength when In the third period q series OF forward passes worked the ball to Yale’s l0-yard line. Three downs netted the visitors only yard. Goodwin dropped back as II TO kick but, instead. heaved a forward pass. which Camp intercepted and ran from Yale’s 5-yard 10 her 33-yard line. Hale’s new men showed up very well. Wheeler played the entire game at quarterback, and he clearly outplayed any body else Yale has used there this year. His snap and dash In calling signals put llOA’ llAt anu cptfh llllO NIlC ktdAl IMAM ~ has yet shown this year. He handled punts cleverly and made some good returns when he seemed boxed and sure TO be tackled. He mixed his plays judiciously. and although Yale was held twice for downs within the 1o-yard line 1t was because the team lacked the punch 10 score, not through mlshandling. with the ball on Washington and Jerferson’s 24-yard line, Flynn made five yards at tackle on a line shift. Pumpelly made seven more for first down on the l2-yard line. In four plunging plays the Yale backs were again piled UP from a total gain OF four yards losing the ball on downs as the period ended. Goodwin punted after the second period opened, and seventeen yard gain by Flynn and a penalty made II first down on the l3-yard line. Pumpelly hit the left size of the line for nine yards. and Flynn made Il first down on the 1-yard line and took IL over on the next play. HARRISON kicked the goal. Both teams exchanged kicks several times, Goodwin working in one forward pass 10 Alexander for a 20-yard gain until Flynn on a fake kick ran from the Yale 30-yard line twenty-six yards. Camp then went In for Flynn, the latter receiving q great ovation as he left the game. A Yale penalty forced Camp to punt to Goodwin, who ran back twenty-five yards to midheld. Goodwin’s forward pass was then blocked, Gallauer catching the ball, and with a clear field was caught by Goodwin after a twenty-seven yard run to the lS-yard line. Pumpelly in one plunge made II first down on the S-yard line, Camp added four yards, and Cap tain Spalding in two plays at tight tackle scored Pumpelly missed the goal. At the opening Of the second half Yale held for three downs, and then Camp IN tercepted Goodwin’s pass and ran TO the Yale S3-yard line. Camp punted. and an other forward pass, Goodwin to Alex ander, worked for twenty yards. An around-end play netted five yards. and then Patterson kicked his fine placement goal from the 36-yard line. YALE SHOWS FLASHES OF BRILLIANT FORM. Defeating Washington and Jefferson 13 to 31Blue on Defensive in Last Period. New Haven. Conn, Oct. 26.-In beat ing Washington and Jefferson 13 to , Saturday, Yale showed flashes of bril- liant football in the early stages of the game. but, as in other games here this season. the last half found Yale on the defensive. In the final quarter the Ellis were outplayed by the, men from Pennsylvania. It was the same style of game as Lafayette played here, when a series of forward passes put Yale to rout just before the close of the game. Wash ington and Jefferson completely baf- fled the Blue with several prettily exc cuted passes and gained total of 105 yards, once taking the ball to Yale’s 20 yard line after a 55 yard sprint by Captain Alexander. Goodwin and Cook did the tossing, and out of ten att ternpts six were successful. Yale tried the forward pass twice, and each time it failed. It was straight football that carried the Blue to victory, Yale’s backs, Flynn, Spauld- ing and Pumpelly, ripping up the vis- itors line for big gains in the first half. The Pennsylvanians were unable to stop the rushes of Flynn, who made hig gains every time he ran with the ball His work on fake kicks. when he found great holes between tackle and end was especially fine, and he was followed closely in effectiveness as ground gainer by Pumpelly-
