Penn Wins From Cornell Team By Brilliant Playing End Runs of Capt. Mercer En- thuse Big Crowd at An nual Battle Philadelphia, Dec 1-Tearing wide holes in the giant Cornell line, racing up and down the field and around the ends with much speed, the Pennsyl- vania football team ended disastrous gridiron season on Franklin Field yes terday with a victory over the Ifh- acans by a score of 21 to g. With out doubt it was the most sensational battle of the year. There was not a minute during the conflict that the crowd of 10000 spectators was not cheering the struggling players. Hard tackles, open field runs. soaring punts. goals from field, and frequent and spectacular use of the forward pass combined to arouse the spectators. Pennsylvania won because the Quak- CTS played the better football. In the finer points of the game the Red and Blue rose to excel ent form and cross ed the Cornell goal line for well-earn- ed touchdowns. Once an easy goal from field added to Pennsylvania’s to- tai. In the first quarter Young SCOT ed the first touchdown for Pennsyl- vania. In the third quarter Capt. Mercer sprinted across the goal hne for the Quakers’ second touchdown. In the fourth period little Marshall was rushed into the fray when the game was fast ebbirg to an end, and drop-kicked a goal from the twenty yard mark. Then, toward the end oe the sixty minutes of play, Spruance, bounding over the soft and slippery field, recovered quarterback kick and darted across the Cornell goal line for the final touchdown. CornelPs points were also scored in a spectacular manner. The Ith- acans’ touchdown came unexpectedly when the Big Red’‘ team was play ing desperately at bay in it’s own ter ritory, forced there by the irresistible tide of the Quakers’ attack. Catching a bounding punt on his own 53-yard line that Minds had no opportunity to reach. Eyrich, the Cornell end, ran up the field for one of the most sensa- tionaI touchdowns made on Franklin Field this year. The first period had almost expired when Eyrich escaped with a clear field. Then came Buffers splendidly executed goal from place ment in the third period, when the score was 12 to in Pennsylvania’s s favor. The resulting points from this 32- yard goal feat placed the Ithacans within menacing distance of the Quak- CTS total. But Cornell joy and Penn syIvania apprehension were dispelled in the fourth quarter, when the Red and Blue outplayed the Carnelian and White decisive!y. In many respects it was an ideal day to play the final act of the football drama of 1911. While soft and treacherous in spots the grid iron was in much better condition than was expected. The largest crowd that had seen the Quakers in action this year was seated inside Franklin Field.
