Thorpes kicking to-day was wonderful ! He is now the third man this season 70 make four field goals in one game. Thorpe’s yard lines and all OF them were clean az whistle Besides scoring these four neld goals. the Indians made a touchdown rush | ing the ball down the field and covering more than seventy yards on nine plIyS. Twice early in the game the Harvard sub stitutes, when hard pressed inside them 5-yard line made stanch defence. The ball was taken from the Indians once on downs. and a few minutes later Carlislss advance was stopped, only to have Thorpe open his battery Of field goals. Harvard was outplayed at every angie this afternoon, the Indians being the faster and more powerful The Carlisle rush line charged like giants. At the snos big gains were made on all kinds OF plays The Indians interference was the best seen in the stadium In years, and the os1sscrosses. with Arcasa and Thorpe taking the ball. brought the thousands Of spsctators in the stadium to their feet m anmiration Harvard did some good gaining also. but did not score by straight work except once. and this because Of one OF the bits OF for tune that sometimes comes 70 team when everything ese is going against II. In the first period, after Thorpe had kicked first attack OF the game, was able. through the good work OF Blackal Morrison ana REYNOLDS, to carry the ball TO within TWEEN “ yards or so OF the Indians goal line. But at this point the Carlisle line braced. and there was no gaining in two plays. Then HOLSTER dropped back 10 the 27-yard line and made a drop kick goal from the field, which tied the score. a field goal Soon after the kickoff that followed Stow, the Harvard left tackle. was sent out of the game for hitting one OF the Indians, and the penalty set the Car Isle team with the ball on Harvsrds IS yard line Here the Indians were penalized for holding. and then, when Thorpe FUN bled the ball, Holister seized II for Harward and ran past midfed before he was overtaken by Thorpe. who recovered HIM self quickly. One play gained FIVE yards. Then Reynolds broke through the left side OF the Indian rush line, and had clear field TO the goal, except for the Car lsle quarterback, Welch. WEIGH got bad humping from the Harvard halfback. REYNOLDS fell down. but was on his feet quickly and off for the goal line. One Indian pursued him. but Morrison was at hand with some good interference. Tho goal that followed Reynolds touchdown made the score to in Harvard’s favor | The Indians soon after the second half ! started had the ball on their own 4o-yard line, and then in nine plays battered their way Gown 70 and across the Harvard goal line. Arcasa made run OF Is yards on a crss-cross play around the Harvard right wing, and Powell drove through the tackles for> some great gains. Thorpe also added distance, and there was no stopping the | Indian attack. Following the touchdown and goal Car Isle again worked up the field to within / twenty-eight yards of Harvard’s goal line. ! Inside the 30-yard line though. the Harvard substitutes got together, and the Indians were forced to kick again. Thorpe respond with his third field goal and the Indians were ahead 10 the tune of IL TO g. When the last quarter started the Harward substitutes were called from the field, With the exception OF Jencks. at right tackle, and Greedy. at quarterback The other nine men were absolutely fresh. and all are Harvard varsity players relied upon To fight Dartmouth and Yale later on. Against the best team Harvard could present the Indians showed no signs OF fatigue, 1 and before play had been going for Ave minutes they scored another field goal. Carlisle was now nine points ahead. but needed them all. for before the period was over Harvard scored a touchdown and goal which, save for Thorpe’s last kick. would | have tied the score. From the kickoff the Indians rushed to | their i5-yard line. Here. however they were | forced to kick. Harvard charged fercely. and Storer. the centre, beat the ball down from the tdckers foot. Storer b.tted the | ball back toward the Indians goal line and chased after IT, He was all alone. and had | the ball in his arms before any one was near him. and the touchdown came easily. | After this Harvard reached midheld on a ! coward gain made on forward pass from Potter to Bud Smith. but Potters next pass went outside: the Indians got the ball and Harvard didn’t have another chance Had the regular Harvard team been in the game throughout it would have had It’s work cut out. for the Indians showed that they could gain much ground on the regu- | lars and Thorpe would have been danger ous as a placement kicker az any point between Hsrvard’s goal and the S-yart ! line The lineup follows: | Carlisle u.s. Princeton already has defeated Harward and should the Tigers take Yale into camp, the sons OF Old Nassau would be hailed as the seasons cham pions IL Is true that Princeton’s victories over Harvard and Dartmouth nave been by the smallest OF margins and that the Tigers were tied by Lee high and Navy. but victory over the Blue Saturday would give her the championship BY narrow margin. Yale. however, will be the favorite in the Tiger game. The Ellis have Lost only one game-to Army on Held so soggy and. under conditions 10 adverse that il can be called little more than a fiuke defeat. Harvard. experts say. has practically been counted out, though a vic tory over Yale on Nov % would do much TO redeem her The Crimson lost 10 Princeton by to 6. while the Indians defeated the sons OF John Harvard by Is TO Is and played SUI perior football There are few who believe the Crimson can be whipped into shape 10 beat Yale. whose line on offense and defense has improved ma terially in the past few days. Pennsylvania is not in the running at all. three signal defeats eliminating her from further discussion as pos sible champion. Outside the Big Four” there are several teams that merit attention Carlisle, which defeated Harvard, and Army, which defeated Yale. may lay some claim 10 championship honors, not having themselves suffered defeat this year The Army. with only two points scored against IL. has made the best showing of them all Carlisle. however, has piled up the biggest score-246. Annapolis and Cornell are also In the indicated class, and Dart mouths only defeat was scored by Princeton’s unusual and freak goal Saturday.
