    c. j. ENDS SEASON WITH A VICTORY Blue and Gray Eleven Plays Bril-. liant Foot Ball Against Lehigh Team. COSTELLO’S SPRINT DECIDES CONTEST Struggle Proves Most Interesting Of Any Played at Georgetown This Year. played on a local gridiron in which the contesting teams struggled more desperately for the mastery than did George. town and Lehigh. The game will go down in foot ball history as being one of the greatest battles that has ever been declded on southern field. Each eleven being well coached, each versed in the open style of play and each having in its backfield heavy line plunger. there was little to choose between the two but what margin there was goes to the Blue and Gray. Both teams played with a machine-like precision that Is seldom seen in these parts, but there was more snap and energy put into the Hilltoppers work, and that Is what told in the long run. While the points scored by both teams we’re more or less OF q fluky origin, there is no doubt that Georgetown showed It’s superiority. 1t gained three times as much ground as Lehigh, its plays seeming to be more powerful and less Of the chance variety. On the defensive the Hill toppers showed themselves to be the equals II not the superiors Of the north ern team 1t may be that d,a had the he Georgetown that team would not have been able to show up as we’ll in that department., but as matters were there Is little doubt that the Hilltoppers played the better while defending their goal. Lee Georgetown’s; the ability to smash through the line. and go clear was not there. In the first quarter 1t was all Georgetown. the Hilltoppers experience having several chances to score. but were unable to get the ball over on &C count of the poor judgment OF the quarterback. The second half was about evenly contested. neither team enoangering the others goal but once. and that was when Lehigh, by dint OF some hard line plunging Ly Cox. carried the ball to Georgetown’s 4-yard line, where 1t was lost on downs. 1t was the only time that the northerners were In striking distance ofthe HilItoppers line. with the exception of the time when the goal from field was made, and then they won the position on a fiuke. Lehigh scored its three points early In the first quarter, when Dunn grabbed the ball when Costello fumbled it, after Georgetown had worked the leather down to Lengths 6-yard line. and an IS yards before he was caught by Carter. 1t looked as II the northerners were going to Sc cure touchdown easily. as their man had a long lead, but Carter landed him plays Lehigh failed to gain. and Price dropped back and booted the ball between the posts. 1t was goal by a mighty narrow margin, and there were q few who did think that the ball had gone wide. hut the referee ruled other wise. With one exception the Penn sylvanians did not get within drop-ktcking distance of the Hilltoppers’ goal again. After practically throwing away two touchdowns in the first quarter and one tn, No or11y ~ ~ no hSy ~ . poor judgment in directing the play, Cos tello came out with the grandstand stunt that gave Georgetown enough points TO win. Receiving punt on Lehgh’s do and good lodging he ran the distance 10 the goal line for the touchdown. Wymard kicked perfect goal. The punting in the game was not what might be expected OF two elevens Of the class Of those opposing each other. Harwig, for Lehigh, seldom maze his kicks bootfng the ball tar below his usual standard. The. fact that the muscles in Wymard’s kicking leg are severely strained probably accounts in great measure for his inability to sc. on long spiralS successfully. The Lehigh quarterback showed poor judgment when he ran the ball out from behind his goal line when It was booted over on the KICKOFF. He came ear scoring two points against his team, as he was tackled within yards Of the line. The generalship of the pilots Of the two elevens was not Of the best by any means, the Lehigh man, If anything having the better Of the argument. 1t was northerners excelled. Both Sitterding and Costello had something on their rival in handling punts and in ability to gain ground. but when 1t came to geleralship they were not there with the stuff that characterized the play Of Price. The officiating was the best that has been seen this year on the local field. The officials quietly enforced their decisions and there was no palavering and debatevident in a majority of the games. 1t is doubtful IL Cunniff’s absence was felt to any great extent, as Feenan did some high-cless work In the pivot positon. On the offensive he did not open up holes as well as he might. but on the defensive he was in every play and his passing was perfect, not a single bad one being registered against him in the days play. Georgetown deserves all the more credit for the victory when it is considered that it put up as rotten an exhibition last Saturday as one would care to see. That the men were able to come out OF a. slump in three days time and put up the articles of ball that the Hilltoppers did yesterday speaks well for the kind of stuff that is in the men. and also for the ability OF a coach who is able intentionally to allow his team to slump and loaf for week and. then get them on edge again in three days for a crucial game. Only once was Lehish able to get away with any Of it’s much touted freak plays or forward passes Nielsen saw its game with Lafayette last Saturday and he built his defense so effectively that the plays by which Coach Reiter hoped to outwit the Hilitoppers were smothered before they were fairly under way. He had some Plays that looked good to work against a team that knew nothing of them. but only once did a forward pass gain ground apainst GEORGETOWN, and that was when Walsh made q poor tackle at the man who caught the ball. BY winning from Lehigh. Georgetown frightened Its grip on the claim it Is put ting forth for the championship of the south. And when il IL considered that
