FULLBACK JONES Is INJURED 190S-Virginia 5; Georgetown O. 1909-Virginia 21: Georgetown O. 1910-Georgetown 15: Virginia O. Many residents Of the National Capital who happened to be downtown last night wondered IL another election had been held yesterday. But they soon Were put straight in their guessing as to the identity of the bowling mobs parading the streets when they were informed that the Georgetown University foot ball team had defeated the eleven from the University of Virginia yesterday afternoon by score OF 15 to on the Georgetown field. Until yesterday only three times In the history of athletic relations between the two universities had Georgetown won from Virginia in foot ball. The last vic tory was gained In 1901, when in a never to-be-forgotten contest the Blue and Gray team came back In the last half and scored IL points, overcoming a lead OF 16 to o. The outcome of this game caused breach between the schools. owing to a statement published in a Virginia pa per controlled by the university. Athletic relations. however, were resumed In 1903, and since that time until yesterday the Old Dominion team had always come out on top In fact. until yesterday Georgetown had ginia team in the last four years. This was In 1907, when a touchdown and goal were made against twenty y-seven points for the southerners. The strength of the Blue and Gray team this season had been heralded broadcast for the last three weeks. 1t has shown decided strength in every contest this season. and as a result the largest crowd was on hand when the whistle blew for the first kick-of. Stands Fill Up EARLY. The gates were thrown open shortly BEfore o’clock and by the time the two teams arrived on the field both stands were packed and the. front aisles were filled. The followers OF Virginia, who came from Charlottesville and other Virginia cities Friday night and yesterday morning, together with alumni from northern points and this city, were massed dents and alumni Of the Old Dominion university represented, but their wives, sisters and sweethearts were in attend ance. A distinctive feature of the enside Of the field was that each woman and girl wore large yellow chrysantheA mum and carried a banner as the enblem Of Virginia. The students from Charlottesville who came to this city to witness the game were massed in the center of the east stand. completely surrounding their stu dent band. Together with the yells and songs OF the students. the band rendered popular airs throughout the contest in an effort to encourage the players. On the west stand another mass OF humanity was standing throughout the contest. Until half hour before the teams ran out on the field a large section of the Georgetown stand was vacant, but this was due to the late arrival of the law school students. who marched to the grounds In body. Law Students March to Field. With band of twenty pieces the law school students assembled at their build ing on e street at 1890 o’clock. With a “Hoya! Hoya! Saxav’ by the 400 or more students, the march to the grounds was begun. The band struck up a lively tune to which the marchers sang a parody. This was kept up all along ths route to the West End field. When they reached the grounds with the band lead ing, the students marched around the field playing, What’s the Matter With In anticipation OF a record breaking crowd the Georgetown management had erected extra stands along the side lines. but even these seats were not enough to accommodate the “rooters.” The enbankment to the north OF the field was packed, while many persons who came to the field in autos were forced TO a distance back Of the ropes. Unique Mascots on Hand. The original ‘‘rooter.’ a small shoat. bedecked i’m Orange and Blue colors. which had been brought from Chariot tesville by the Virginia team, was the first mascot upon the field. He was quickly followed by Snow Ball” . southern darky. who wore a suit of the same colors as the pig. They have been seen upon the Georgetown field before. In fact, the transportation OF annual foot ball game is one of the first things looked after by the Virginia team. AS they rambled up and down the east side line the Virginia followers while photographers kept them busy posing for snapshots. “Snow Ball” and the shoat, however. were not equal to the mascot task OF bringing victory to the southern team, and ii was declared by many at the close OF the contest that something more original will be sprung next year, I’m the hope or turn ing the tables As a mascot Georgetown had the four year-old son Of Trainer Joe Quirk. who appeared on the field clad in full foot ball uniform. On his sweater was C; ana the game he was given hearty reception by the Blue and Gray followers. Although both teams put up a gruelng contest. there was Dut one DdO dcc1uent. Jones. the Virginia fullback. in tthe last quarter of play was struck hard blow in the stomach while lying on the ground and had to be assisted on the field. He remained in a semi-conscfous condition all the tfme the game went on and for about a quarter of an hour after he had been moved to the gymnasium. DR. s. Logan Owens, a Georgetown graduate administered medical treatment, assisted by Coach Nielsen of the George town team and Coach Crawford of the Virginia team. The injured player later go. VIRGINIA’S DEFEAT BY GEORGETOWN The defeat of the University of Virginia football team by George town in Washington on Saturday was a grievous disappointment to Vir- GINA football lovers. and especially 80 as the defeat by the Washington University makes the game with North Carolina on Thanksgiving Day a doubtful one, despite the fact that Washington and Lee defeated Carolima on Saturday by a small score. There Seems no question about the fact that Virginia has the weakest team she has placed on the field for a long time and its fortune this season raises a serious question as to the efficiency of the graduate coach system. The fault this year may be lack of material at the University, but even granting that there is a scarcity Of material it still seems that the coaches have done very lit tie with that on hand. The eleven which was defeated by both Carlisle aud Georgetown is capable of being made better team than those two games showed it to be, and it seems that the coaches should be able to whip it into much better shape before the Carolina contest. Virginia was weak both Extensively and defensively against Georgetown; her tackling was wretched and her in reference worse and the coaches cannot escape the responsibility for these glaring faults. The University team is the pride of every follower of the game in this State because it is the leading Observation-Disclosures, and each one of them wants to see her victorious on Thanksgiving. Whether she is or not depends in large measure on the graduate coaches. That football is losing none of its popularity is attested by the fact that eight thousand persons saw the game in Washington on Saturday.
