TWAS A BULLY VICTORY Middies Showed West Point That The Goat Can Do Bet ter At Licking Lehigh Than The Army Mule MIDSHIPMEN 80 LEHIGH 0 Sailor Lads Show Improvement In Every Department OF Game But Pariicu- Iarlv In Their Attack IdIlN III iUctT AttdCk The Navy’s team is coming” and will, if the present rate of improve ment continues, give Army the big gest surprise any poor mule ever had, is the joyous prediction made by the MILDLY supporters following the game with Lehigh Saturday afternoon. Showing improvement in every department of the game, but more par ticularly in attack, the sailors rolled up thirty points on their opponents and kept their own goal line safe at all times When, with the score 27 to 0-one point less than the Army fig ures against the same team-Dalton booted over a placement goal from the 37-yard line and in one play equaled and bested the Mules score by two points, the Middies and their friends all went wild. That Navy would do better against Lehigh than Army had done two weeks ago had been hoped, but not very confidently expected. ‘’28 to 0 or bust” was the Middies’ slogan, and everyman on the team worked for and helped to accomplish this end. Prior to the game members of the Lehigh team said that no such one sided game as the West Point contest would occur on Worden Field, and claimed that the Lehigh team brought to meet Navy was far better team in every way than the one that West Point had so easily downed. Before the game was over the same man said that Navy today has bet ter team than Army’had two weeks ago. The excellence of the Navy team was indicated by the fact that it Sc cured its points In nearly all the ways which can figure in football contest, and the work was not done by few stars, but that every man on the team did his part and nearly every one shone in some feature of play. Dalton was the star in both the rushing and bucking game, as usual, but his ground gaining was nearly equalled by Clay, Rodes. Cochran and McReavy, while both Cochran and Clay did some excellent punting. Dalton kicked two field goals during the afternoon, but Cobb performed the feat once, his toe being responsible for the first score of tie game. The Midshipmen showed great strength in every department of the game, and the attack was superior to any previous performance in swiftness, power of attack and certainty of aim. The Navy improved upon the splendid defensive game it has exhibited in every contest this season, and its attack was nearly in class with its defensive game. The game started without Dalton, generally considered the strongest ground-gainer in the lineup. Clay and Cochran were in at the halves, and the former did the best offensive work of the quarter. During this period. however, the Navy was not able to cross Lehigh’s line, but Cobb, who was called into the game in Hamilton place, kicked field goal from placement on the 20-yard line. Early in the second period Dalton took his place in the backtield and caused a distinct increase in the power of the Navy’s attack. After much kicking the Navy carried the ball to Lehigh’s 20.yard line, but was held and Dalton kicked a goal from placement from the 25-yard line. Late in the quarter the Midshipmen received the ball on Lehigh’s 35yard line with Dalton and Clay do ing the greater part of the advancing, carried the ball to Lehigh’s 5-yard line, from which point Dalton carried it over. Dalton missed the goal. The Midshipmen scored again early in the third period. Dalton kicked off to Lehigh’s 8-yard point and a short punt by Harwig gave the Navy the ball on the 30-yard line. Again Dali ton and Clay carried the ball down tie field and Sowell took it over on a plunge between guard and tackle. Dalton again missed goal. The excellent running of McReavy. who had succeeded Clay, figured in the next touchdown, as he did a large part of the work which carried the ball to Lehigh’s 5-yard line. Dalton carried the ball over. At the opening of the last period Lehigh’s defense had been petty well battered down and its backs in condition where they handled the ball bad ly. The sharp eye of the Navy line men or the ball after it had been mishandled by the visiting backs, put the local players in position for the two scores of the half, touchdown by Dalton, from which he also kicked the goal and his long field goal from placement, with which the scoring
