Team Defeats Nebraska at Foot Ball. SCORE AT END OF GAME rs ~ TO o Gophers Start Whirlwind Play and Keep it Up to Finish. CONTEST WON WHILE STILL YOUNG That McGovern of Last Year is Yet Shining Star, AT RIGHT PLACE WHEN NEEDED During One Stage of the Play for Time e Looked aH ThOuEh the Nebraska Eleven Might Score, Score, MINNEAPOLIS, Mimi, oct. i6-(special Telegram. )-Speed and strength concentrated in one of the best backfield quarteh ever played on a western grtdiron enabled the mighty Minnesota foot ball team to put the Nebraska eleven TO rout on NorthrOT field this afternoon in the finest exhibition Of the new game seen in Minneapolis this fan. The score was “a 70 O The Gophers began a whirlwind attack in tho opening minutes of the struggle ara claimed victory before the playing was four minutes old. by rushing a series OF plays down the field and sending the won derful McGovern over the Cornhusker line for touchdown before the small band OF Nebraska rooters could realize that the game was under way. Those who watched the work Of the Min nesota backs at once seemed certain that the proteges Of Coach williams would roll up a score OF huge proportions. Then, as II to verify this presentment the Minnesota men came right back in the next few minutes OF play and scored another touch down. Before the final Of the first quarter the score had been increased TO sixteen points through a well-executed series OF end runs and split plays that enabled the backs to pierce the Cornhusker line for cnastent and lengthy gains. Come Right Back. Though hopelessly beaten in the first quarter Of the game the Cornhusker play ers did not give Up. but came back at their opponents with a display Of grit and stub. born defense. In the second quarter the play called forth comment from the large crowd OF spectators that had made their way to the field, expecting to see the Minnesota team held to a low score. The secondary defense OF tho Nebraska team held up wonderfully in this quarter and would have held the local team seoreless, but for the fumbling Of the ball on the Nebraska twenty-five-yard line BY Warner. A long time in the game It looked aa though the Cornhusl1ers might score for they were racing down the field with the ball and were within thirty yards Of the Minnesota goal At this juncture, how. ever a kick was blocked and q husky Gopher picked up the oval, shooting half way across a clear field for a touchdown All credit for the victory OF the Gophera must 80 to the backfield, for the men playing there were wonderful in their at tacl1s and any one OF the four was able to gain ground against the Nebraskans. The same McGOvern. Johnnie McGovern, the man who was a terror in the game at Omaha last fall, was the scintiilating head OF contest His end runs and darts through the line were the best that he ever essayed. To those who saw him perform in the game at Omaha Il seemed that he could do no better work, but today he surpassed anything that ne accomplished year ago. Only for few minutes In the third quarter was the Nebraska defense able to hold this wriggllng play in tow. At all other stages of the game he took the ball, and either fleeing around the wings Of lodging through the line, he ripped Oft yard after yard toward the NebraBkaa goal. He was tackled by the alert Corn huskers, but like a slippery eel he twisted and squrmed and got loose. Rosenwald, Stevens and Captain john ston also did some great playing against the Cornhuskers. Rosenwald, next TO Mo- Govern, played the best ball for the Gophers. His gains on end runs and drillG through the line were substantial, The Gopher line played better game than had been expected and at times was the equal OF the Nebraska forwards. In the first half, the work Of the Minnesota line kept the Cornhuskers from making their downs Despite the heroic efforts o. the Cornhusker line, the local forwards would create holes and dive through in timG to break up interference and stop plays In their infancy. Nebraska Offense Weak. At practically all times the Cornhuskeg offense was weak and no advance could be made against the wall that Williams haS formed. No gains were made at the MIN nesota wings, while on the line plays the yards won we’re very few. The contest today was a hard one foI the Cornhuskers TO lose as they had ons pected to get away with a low score. The | fight they made was a stubborn one. but they were up against a better team and had TO suecumb TO defeat ! Nebraska thought Minnesota had a strong team last fail, but this years Gopher eleven Is 40 per cent bettkr than the one that held Nebraska IA to at Omaha. ! Only one serious injury occurred 10 mas / the game. Elliott left guard for the Corn huskers, was thrown in hard play durins the closing minutes Of the first half and sustained broken collarbone that prob. ably will cause him TO be out OF the game / for the remainder OF the season. ] For the Cornhuskers. Collins, Temple and / o. Frank were the men who threw Joy int the Cornhusker rooters at times. They played doGEed ball on the offenSe ana stopped many Minnesota players. Every little while Collins could be seen buci1inG through the defense and pulling down a runner. o Frank killed several attempted end runs. Temple held up his side OF the line and broke down offensive Gopher plays | frequently Two Expensive FumbIea. In the exchange Of punts the CornhuskerI lost many yards. McGovern and Pickering kicked better than Frank many times and
