DENVER HOLDS MARQUETTE Both Teams Fair to Score at Any Stage-An Dope Upset by Home Bunch. DENVER, Colo, Oct 16-(Special Teleegram.) 1.-The Denver Methodists sprang a big sensation Saturday when, contrary to all expectations, they held the Marquette Catholics to a to y score in clean, hard fought battle From first to last the locals outplayed Marquette in the new style formations. The Koch Ter eleven was unable to penetrate the rangy line OF the visitors, but by a va riety of trick formations and forward passes they succeeded in keeping the ball in Marquette territory for a large part of the time All of the Juneau gains were made on the old style double pass plays with linesmen carrying the ball for large majority Of the gains, The feature of the game was the man ner in which the Denver line held at critical moments Twice Marquette lost the ball within Denver’s ten-yard line, their backs being unable to penetrate the solid defense OF the locals. Another time the visitors worked the ball to the 9ix-yard line only to hear time called for the end of the first half Denver had two chances to score on forward passes, but each time the men fumbled the ball with clear field ahead of them to the goal Strong Wind blOWtnRs A strong wind blowing across the field for a majority of the time prevented any accurate kicking and in a large measure interfered with the use OF the forward pass pass on the part of the locals, Smaller had two good trials for goals from thirty yards, but each time his boot failed. Among the individual players Crowley, the great offensive back of Denver, Greene at center, and the Marquette tackles, Hanley and Elson, were easily the stars. Practically every big gain by Marquette was made on tackle around formations, the two bulky linesmen tear ing great holes in the Denver defense. Greene proved a bulwark for Denver and made his last game Of foot ball notable one Crowley was in almost every offensive play. One decided eff feet of the new rules wRs found in the fact that neither team was forced to use a substitute throughout the game, the quarters giving the men all the time to rest that was needed. Both teams were penalized frequently, Marquette largely Nor “roughing” and the push and pull game. while Denver lost chiefly on the twenty-yard zone rule The result of todays game has given the Denver squad unlimited confidence In their ability to cope with the Cornhuskers next Saturday at Lincoln, while Creighton begins to look little diff ficult TO Marquette. 300 DENVER UNIVERSITY BOYS STRIKE FOR HOLIDAY Students Storm Class Room After Football Victory and Pledge to Resist Punishment DENVER, Oct. 18.-”We want a hoIiday’ was the burden Of the shouts of more than 300 students at Denver uni versity, who reinforced their demands with changing cowbells, drums and tin cans, stormed recitation rooms and declared a strike when their demands We’re refused yesterday. N According to custom, the students are given a holiday on a Monday fell lowing a football victory. Saturday the Denver university eleven held the Marquette team to a 0 to 0 score A number of enthusiasts considered this in effect a victory, and demanded that the usual custom be observed. Shortly after o’clock nearly a hundred students, led by four upper classmen, stormed the main building, entered class rooms, dragging students and professors into the halls and threatened to throw belligerent professors through the windows. After successfully breaking up classes the insurgents retired to the campus and held serpentine dance. Deaf to these appeals, Chancellor H. A. Buchted informed the students at chapel that the classes would be held as usual. This order was met by the declaration of strike by members of the raiding party. Fearing the insurgents would be given holidays for the remainder of the year when the faculty meets, near ly 200 students have signed a pledge to stay away from classes If any of the participants are suspended until all are reinstated.
