Great Crowd Sees Contest At West Ind Resulting In 12 to Il Score BIRMINGHAM BOY WAS BRIGHT STAR FOR AUBURN Brown of Sewanee Thrilled Everyone With His Spectacular Work-Au- burn Started by Sweeping An tagonists Off Their Feet. | In one of the most brilliant football games seen in Birmingham in a long while Sewanee defeated Auburn yester- day afternoon at West End park by the narrow margin of one point-12 to Il. Auburn’s defeat is traceable to the fail ure to kick goal after Bradley Streit, in the first few minutes of play, had swept all the dope to the winds and ploughed over Sewanees stout line for a touchdown. The feature of the game was the work of Brown, the diminutive quarterback of Sewanee He redeemed himself for what his poor generalship cost his team last season. He made a splendid run in the first half which was followed by a touch- down. In the second half, he ran 40 yards to touchdown, himself, and again, only magnificent defensive work by Auburn saved another Sewanee touchdown from a point of vantage which Brown had gained. Birmingham Boy Stars. Bradley Streit, a Birmingham boy, last season captain of the High school team, did the best work for Auburn He was NO@AA---AA-ACAAN4 regular. Penton, could not have done better. Young Streit was in every play His bucking was splendid His end run ming brought forth the most strenuous applause of the spectators His inter ference gave Hardage an opportunity to make several very spectacular runs. Hardage played a splendid game too, and whenever he got his hands on the ball 1t was advanced He is perhaps the best runner. in a broken field in Dixie today. Another whose work was sensational was Hawkins, the big full back of the mountaineers. He hit Au- burns line with terrific force and gen. erally propelled himself through it! On the defensive he did able work, too. Neither team resorted to the unusual. The tactics, in the most part. were sim liar. Very few tricks were attempted. The forward pass netted neither consist ent profit. In ability the crowd consid. cred the two aggregations about evenly matched. Auburn has the heavier team. Both teams are fast Both are game Auburn drew the harder luck. In the first half hardly before the play was well under way two tackles, Esslinger and Cogsdell, were knocked out Then, to begin with, Fullback Penton could not get into the fight on account of injuries and Mccoy was absent for similar req sons and Rabbit” Harris did not enter until 1t was absolutely necessary. Se- vance was not hit so hard, although Meyers, one of it’s best men, was unable to get in harness on account of an at tack of collie which hit him suddenly Friday night. He was on the field in citizens clothes. No Spirit of Cutter. The game was spectacular It was hard fought. It was brilliant Neither team yielded one inch. It was a fight with out quarter and neither showed mercy to his antagonist. There was not a sin gle demonstration of the Quitting” spirit. Auburn, in the beginning. swept se- vance off it’s feet, because Auburn adopt ed the tactics of the mountaineers. Au- burn came to Birmingham yesterday not only great defensive machine. but an offensive machine as well. Auburn got off its plays with more speed than Au- burn ever demonstrated before After a down it was lineup in trice and off again. And 1t counted for Auburn, too. It was a fine crowd which gathered to see the fight. The bleachers from where the best view of the game could be obtained, were filled Many were seat ed in the grandstand and in the boxes. To the front and side was a long line of automobiles. Around the netting to the south there crowded a host of par tisans, yelling and scrambling for points of vantage. More than 5000 people, 1t is estimated, witnessed the fine battle. While Sewanee was a to l favorite
