HOW TRICK WAS TURNED Auburn’s Victory Was Gean-Cut. SEWANEE WAS FAIRLY BEATEN Orange and Blue Squad Pass Through Montgomery. Are Jubliant Over Talxi- of Tigers scalps and Resent Efforts to Class Victory as Luck. Stepping bravely and lightly. in- spite of physical soreness. jubilation fairly exuding from every feature and movement. the Auburn football squad passed through Montgomery Sunday morning. returning triumphant to the little town fn Lee county. Coach Dona- hue and Coach Dwyer, like the men. are exuberant at the victory, and yet are not surprised. Sewanees scalp they all along expected to take. We left Auburn for Birmingham with the intention of winning the game” says Coach Dwyer. The bunch had been trained and coached to the highest point. and being keyed up, they took advantage of every op- portunity. every slip on the part of Sewanee. The opportunity came: 1t was accepted and made good. That was all” The Auburnites declare that they had no thought of losing the game at any point. nor went into the contest with the idea of holding Sewanee to a close score. we went in to win. We took every chance, and made good on the chance that counted” “Sewanee’s touted prestige. and the fact that the Tennessee college held the big end of the odds. which varied from 10 to l to 3 to l, but never to even money, never daunSed us in the least. We knew that our line would hold, and that our ends were unex- celled. and the game bore this out The idea of a defeat never entered our heads” According to the coaches and the men. Auburn improved during the progress of the game. ending stronger than the Sewanee bunch. The Ten nesseeans played on the offensive dur ing the first half. but in the second. there was not single moment but that the Alabama collegians were the aggressors. Sewanee depended mainly on long end runs during the first half. and, while gaining considerable ground worked her backs to fearful ex- tent sewanee’s gains in the first half, &C., cording to Coach Donahue. were due to the fact that the green men in Auburn’s line, rattled in their first college game of note. failed to hold. Later they settled down. and the con- test was nip and tuck, the teams being evenly matched, and neither possessing an advantage. We played a steady game, watched closely every point, took advantage of Sewanee’s blunders-and won,” is Coach Donahue’s terse summary of NASAOIS OA years. And that victory enRenders in the minds of the Auburn lads visions of Southern championship. Sewanee. long regarded as one of the Souths pre- mier opponents of the football game, has been defeated. Yandervilt looms up as Auburn’s opponent for champion ship honors. but regarding even that college the Auburnites are sanguine. Coach Donahue. when questioned as to the respective merits of Sewanee and declared that the contest between the two will be, from the present view point, nip and tuck. There Is but a toss-up between the two, and there is every chance of Auburn ending in the first place among South ern colleges, he said. The game of Saturday has but nerved the football men of ..uburn to further efforts, and they are sincere when they announce that they will work harder from today than ever before to uphold Auburn’s prestige of former years, and to redeem the losing record of the last few years. Captain Mcclure did not a accom- pany the bunch to Auburn, remaining in Birmingham for few days, thence to visit relatives in Anniston.
