ALABAMA EASILY DOWNS TENNESSEE Two TouchdoWns Are Scored Against Knoxville Players UMPIRE IS BADLY HURT Because Some Persons Thought the Umpire Was Unfair in His Decis- Ions He Is Pursued and Hit With a Stone. UMPIRE IS BADLY HURT Knoxville, Tenn, November 13.-(Spe- al.)-1n one of the prettiest and hardest fought games ever seen on the local gridiron the University of Alabama de- feated the University Of Tennessee this afternoon by the margin of two touch- downs. Palmer failed to kick goal from touchdown and the score resulted 10 to 0. All the scoring was done in the last half. What was otherwise a beautiful game was marred by small riot at the con- clusion when Umpire Elgin was chased by a mob and before the street car on which he was riding could pull out of the crowd he was struck on the head with a stone thrown by some member of the mob. The crowd took offense at a penalty imposed by the umpire in the second half. Alabama had just scored a touch down. After the kickoff with Tennessee taking the ball in the middle of the field Ramsay broke through the Alabama line and ran nearly 4o yards before being downed, putting tht ball dangerously in Alabama’s territory, but Elgin refused to allow the play and imposed a 15-yard penalty. alleging that Franklin had been guilty of holding. The Tennessee play CTS protested vigorously, but there was little rough work on the field. In the crowd, however, Egin was hissed roundly. Elgin Hit on Head. At the conclusion of the game big crowd followed him to the street car He entered an open car and went to the opposite side from the crowd, but was pursued around. The affair did not take serious turn until some unknown mem- Der of the crowd threw stone, which struck Elgin on the left side of the head The wound bled profusely, but Is not serious. There was no further trouble although the crowd followed Elgin to the hotel hissing and hurling epithets at him all the way. Police protection was afforded him and Referee Mooney of Mooney school. Some fair minded citizens did much to protect him and one citizen of- fered a reward of $25 to find out who threw the stone, but he has not been discovered. The crowd thought Elgins penalties were partial to Alabama During the first half the advantage was slightly with Tennessee, which team seemed to play fairly better game than at any previous time in the season. Ala bama made her first touchdown about the middle of the second half after I<ipp had punted gut of bounds at Alabamas 45- yard line Wilkinson made 15 yards on an end run, and after three slight line gains, Palmer made a forward pass to Baum gartner for % yards, placing the ball on Tennessees 10-yard line. VandeGraaff went through for six. yards but on a sec ond trial fumbled tlW ball, but Wilkinson recovered 1t on the one-yard line. Nan- degraaff then bucxed the line for a touch- down. On the kickoff came the play which started the riot. Military Formation. A few minutes later Alabama success fully used the military formation, which, with a 30-yard end run by Palmer, put the ball on Tennessee’s 10-yard line. Tennes- see held on her two-yard line. Two at tempts to bring the ball out through the line netted but three yards and Ramsey tried to punt, but the ball was blocked
