ALABAMA DIVIDES THE HONORS EVENLY WITH GEORG|ANS Spectacular and Exciting Game Between Two Plucky AggregationS EACH TEAM SCORES IN THE FIRST HALF Georgia, Twice In, Second Half, Holds Alabama on the Fve-Yard Line. Hodeson’s Three Fail ures to Goal. matched as two football aggregations could be. And the result of the game-6 to G. bore out the prediction that the score would be exceptionally close. While in spots the battle was ragged, in other spots it was spectacular in the extreme. Excitement remained intense from the dropping of the hat. From the dropping of the hat, too, it was any mans game. Alabama with nerve on edge and over anxious to triumph, handicapped itself in the first half by repeatedly fumbling and failure to recover punts. This gave Geor- gia an advantage which threatened re- peatedly to cost Alabama the game. In the second half, however, Alabama settling down, outplayed Georgia, and twice stood on the five-yard line of the Red and Black In both instances, how ever, Georgia gamely rallied to the de- fense and twice again drove the Ala bamians down the hill. The Fight Opens. Both teams.wer light Alabama weigh ing 153 and Georgia 157. Both were ex- ceedingly fast, however, and the pluck of each is unquestionable. At no stage of the game was either side backward. When the Georgians held the ball Ala bama grimly charged to meet them. When Alabama possessed the sphere Georgia was ever ready to spring into action. Both teams were tricky to a great de- gree, and throughout the afternoon the spectators were continually guessing as to what would come next. Unusual for l nations, skillful maneuvers, and an inde- | terminable string of tricks held the sight seers enthralled from beginning to end L It was an ideal afternoon for a bril- liant game. The players like impatient chargers champing their bits, awaited the signal to fight with impetuous spirits and eyes flashing fire. Georgia kicked to Alabama’s 1O-yard line. Peebes first signal was for a forward pass There was tumble and Georgia got the ball. Twice the Geor- gians failed to gain. forward pass at that time flew into the arms of Captain Burks, and amid an outburst of Alabama cheers he carried the sphere out of dan 1 ger. Then there occurred tumble and Geor- | five-yard line on a forward pass from a fake placement kick. Tackle Franklin hurled himself against the Crimson-White line, but fell back a crumbing heap. Full back Bostwick dashed himself against l Center Countess, but he was able to gain 1 but one little yard. Then Newsome, over tackle carried the ball to the Ala bama line, and the referee allowed the score. Hodgson kicked the pigskin be- | ho nd first blood within 10 minutes of batte Georgia Draws First Blood. Alabama’s fumbles continued unabated Derrick kicked the ball to the 30-yard line and Woodruff recovered it from 8 tumble Two attempts to gain amounting to naught, Hodgson, whose toe won the Clemson game for Georgia, dropped back to placement But the Alabamians break ing headlong through the line of Red and Black blocked the punt, and kicked the ball out of danger. By employing a number of tricks m rapid succession Georgia worked the ball again to Alabama’s 40-yard line and at this point Hodgson attempted another goal from placement. This, too, the Alabamians blocked but Woodruff of Georgia fell on the ball. minute af- ter Hodgson made his third attempt and for the third time he failed. In the scramble Left Guard Greene got pos session of the ball, passed the entire Georgia team and broke away for goal But Woodruff, Georgia’s great speed mer- chant, giving chase. brought him to earth again.s Arant Ties the Score. In rapid succession Reidy and Pratt bit off 10 yards each around the Geor- gia ends, while Burks and Gresham gained 20 through the lines. When the l Georgians, rallying, hel3 Alabama Tor two downs without gain, Peebles put the military” formation into operation and behind this protection surprised his ! opponent by bunting. Pratt sailed the sphere to Georgas 5-yard line and 1t bounded across. Arant caught the pig skin in his arms and Alabama had scored :. Reidy goaled Georgia’s surprise was complete Wood ruff, in the first place, did not suspect l the coming of a punt behind the mil | itary” formation, and in the second. did not look for the ruse on account of the fact that guard instead of an end stood l separate from the team.
