FIERCE AND FAST. Was Washburn-H Haskell Football Game Saturday. Sens Of IchabOd Victorious in the End. SCORE STOOD IL TO A. Every Inch of Ground Was Bit teFIy Contested. SCORE STOOD IL TO 4. Rough Work characterized the Struggle From Start. In the hardest fought and most spec tacular game for many years Wash burn defeated the strong Haskell In dams Saturday by a score of II to A. the Indians scoring a field goal and Washburn making two touchdowns. 1t was a game that never lacked in terest and the flying formations. dazxling sprints around the ends, breath less forward passes. grinding bucks, punts, and marvellous head work kept the great crowd of 1900 people in a continuaI uproaF Coach Weede and many other football authorities say that 1t was the hardest fought game ever seen in the west. The Haskell braves are exceptionally strong this year. They have fine coaching and fine general. They are quick as lightning on theiF feet and they are as slippery as eels to tackle. They outweigbed. Washburn to the man and their strength combined With their namble. agile performances made them a dangerous foe. Being of a rather fiery disposition they grew wrathy easily and after WashbuEn had made her first touchdown, the Indians dug up their hatchets and the rest of the game was q series Of tricky plays and penalties for rough work. The Indians were unnecessarily NOukl III OdlhtneS > 9dtAAO- NAh their men were taken from the game and placed on the bench for under handed work. Twice Haskell was the loser of half the distance to the goal line on account of their tactics. The redskins would kick. elbow, slug and do anything to put a wearer OF the piue to the bad. Their tripping was the most conspicuous fault and in mid-fleld within full sight Of the gFandstand they would turn a blue man turtle Coach Kent of Haskell coached eontinually from the side lines and once ne was caught by Referee McCarrol and the Indians were penalized almost max way down the field. As q whole the Haskell Indians played a rough game although they played one OF the pest games ever seen on WashDurn Ielu’ Their speed and strength VIII make them a winner the rest of the season, Washburn played the best game OF the present season. The spirit was there and 1t was combined with the best strength of the year. The men knew they would lose all claims 10 championship If they lost to Haskell and they knew they would gain many points IL they won. Haskell and Wash burn have always been keen rivals and this added interest to the game. ana the team itself was In better eondltlon. Brethour and Codding were back In the line. Robb was at fullbaek ana no one was stale. 1t is true that bruises were plentiful but they were forgot ten .Washburn used the forward pass to the greatest advantage. Two times when the Blue was within striking dis lance OF the Haskell goal and the dis lance had been made by line plunges and grinding work Hope would toss a pretty forward pass into the hands of a waiting man and the touchdown was made. Only twice did the big play fail. Haskell has always had the reputaton OF handling the forward pass with the greatest success but Saturday the Champions made their work look like that OF a novice. Washburn’s back field got away good-mighty good. They played beautiful interference and they worked together all the time. Not a tumble was made In the snapper work and with a stronger line to allow the plays to get started Washburn would have an easy claim to all state honors. The. Blue line is still unsteady. Time and time again while a clever quarter back or onside play was being made the line would give away and a fight Ing Indian would spoil the whole thing. Haskell at times went through the Washburn line at will and at one time they made 80 yards by simply puneturing the line. Then the line would hold and q punt was necessary. To say that the game was hard fought would be telling but a mite of the truth. At one time down near the Washburn goal line a touchdown should have been counted but the ball
