Game Starts I’m Earnest Today. College football starts in earnest in the northwest today, with all the teams of the Blk Six in more than preliminary games, and with Whitman and Washington matched against one another. Theirs is the first confer ence contest and will be watched with /. eagerness by all the gridiron fans. The college, have all broken clean / on the four-year clause. and players who have had four years of college / football will not be allowed to play this year. That will show up the teams some, but its ultimate good will be worked out. Pullman loses RAIDER. Idaho loses Edmunton and Whitman several, but other new men get a chance who will develop into stars in their turn, and by another year the legislation will be felt but little. East side High Wins. Rev. Paul RAIDERS light and speedy East Side High school football eleven sprang a huge surprise upon Coach Thorne’s Portland Academy team Thursday by decisively trimming the Tiger” squad in a hotly contested game by the score Of 10 to 0. 1t was the first game Of the interscholastic season. and the victory of ular one, for the youngsters clearly demonstrated their superiority over the academy lads in every depart ment of the game The result while surprise TO the Portland Academy admirers. was foregone conclusion two minutes after the bail had been put In play. Portland Academy was figured as the winning club by practically all who were in attendance, Even the most enthusiastic admrer OF the East Side contingent would hard ~ venture a guess that their team mad a chance before the game, but as soon as Captain Cornell sent his team into the first scrimmage, the IS pect suddenly changed, and the root ers for the maroon and gold became very much in evidence in the big grandstand and around the field. The East Side eleven simply swamp ed the Portland Academy players with a series of end runs, cross bucks and line plunges of such n well executed nature that the Portland Academy boys were utterly surprised and COM pletely demoralized Three state University Teams. University of oregon, Eugene. Oct will be three games today and tomorrow in which university teams will participate, the Freshman Eugene High this afternoon, the Ore gon- Willamette game here tomorrow and the second varsity -Chemawa ! game tomorrow. The freshman team is In excellent ! shape and as several of their men who have been playing with the varsity , will be playing with them, should , have no difficulty in rolling up a good , score. Eugene, however, has a good team and as they have been practc- ! ing hard this week, may surprise the / freshmen. ! The varsity team is not in the best condition for the Willamette game as | a number of the men have been 5 bruised up considerably in the stiff | scrimmage practice. Coach Forbes has been putting { them through the past week. Sever al of the freshmen will also be in the : game with Eugene High today and 1t is hard to tell what condition they will be in tomorrow. Everybody is confident that Oregon will be vlcto- ‘ rious, The result of the game between the ! second varsity is looked forward to \ with a great deal of interest as the c Chemawa team is an unknown guam t lity. The second team is exceptional c ly strong this year, as practically all 5 Of last years men are back in the t game and some excellent new mate c trial has turned out. Several of its members are showing varsity form ‘ and may be added to the varsity I squad before long. In scrimmage dur | ing the past week they have several t
