ARMY SURPRISED WHEN NAVY L|CKS II AT FOOTBALL Mldshipnen Defeat Cadets in Annual Game at PhiIadeI- /. phia-Score 6 to 0 PHILADELPHIA, Pa, November 30. The navy today defeated the army in the annual contest on Franklin field by score of 6 to O. Before brilliant representative assembly of nearly 30,- 900 persons the game was played. AL though the score looks close, the West Point team never seriously threatened the Annapolis goal, the midshipmen playing all around their opponents at nearly every stage of the contest. The result was surprise to the army, for, with heavier men, more experienced and a better season s record than the navy, the cadets could see nothing but vic tory. The navy soon put the army on the run, but like good soldiers, the army came back and fought very hard. It was no use, however, for it was the navy’s day The game was marred by fumbling and other misplays. The new style plays, particularly the forward pass, failed nearly every time they were tried. Both teams resorted to much bunting and end runs. The only score in the game was made in the first half The midshipmen twice had the ball within striking distance, but failed each time. They failed to follow up their advantage, but finally after bunting and due largely to army fumbes, the midshipmen fell with the pigskin on the army’s 26-yard line Left Half Back Douglas went through the West Point line for ten yards. A forward pass helped some and another line play put the ball two yards from the cadets goal, The army braced up, but the navy was not to be defeated. Douglas-was called on again and with a nightly plung went over for touch. down. Lang kicked goal, There was little doing the remainder of the half. The second half was mostly listless, play frequently being stopped to enable trainers to fix injured men. Each team constantly punted in hope of recovering the ball on fumbles in the opponents territory. This frequently happened. The star of the game was Captain Doug las. His bunting was uniformly good and his tackling swift, but it was in running with the ball where he showed best. For the army Beavers was called upon to do most,of the work and played 3 brilliant game until forced to leave the field through injuries. Society was out in force to witness the game. Though the president was not present, he was represented by Miss Ethel Roosevelt, who was the guest of acting Secretary of War Oliver and the Misses Oliver The Oliver party in eluded Assistant Secretary of the Treasury Beekman. Secretary Metealf officially represented the navy depart ment and he was accompanied by Mrs. Metcalf and Senator and Mrs. Flint of California. A big gray mule covered with the gray, black and yellow of the army in the capacity of mascot ambled in front of the army stand and goat was the mascot for the navy
