ILLINOIS Gets ALL THAT GOPHERs DIDN’T. Chicago Varsity Team Slaughters Down State Eleven by a Score Of 63 to O. CnlcagO. NOV. L.-Wtth 1emaRkar BILE exhibition of “new’‘ football in all its glory and a representation Of Chi Of play, the maroon team Yesterday trampled the University Of illinois, eleven under foot and ended up with the top-heavy score of 63 to o. The visitors were outclassed every minute and received their relentless drubbing with only a gallant show Of pluck and gameness to keep them on their feet. Walter Stefen, Chicago’s right half back, was the chief figure in the The exhibition made by the maroon star was one of the most brilliant ever seen on a football field, and when it was over he had credit for five of Chicago’s ten touchdowns, every one of which he earned by his sensational dodging and open-feid genius. While the Illini proved weaker than was expected, Stagg’s men deserved the praise they got, for their work was magnificent and far above the average all the time. Weight Does Not Count. The visitors were Chicago IS better in point of weight, but were never able to show their superiority in that respect. Their heavy line could not hold at any stage, while Chicago’s forwards were in the “stone wall’ class. The giants in the nlini eleven were stunned by Chicago’s speed. The forward pass and the short on side kicks were worked repeatedly by the maroons and the fans had practically their first chance to pass Judgment on them. The tricks in the hands Of Eckersan and his cohorts were man aged perfectly, with few exceptions, and they were instrumental in taking the ball to the goal line every time a score was made. Captain Eckersall was a wonder at open-feld work and genera lship, while the entire backfeld came in for a share Of it,. Straight football worked much Of the time every bit as we’ll as the tricks. Illinois ends were exceptionally weak and they were circled time and again. Chicago had little chance to show de. fensive strength. Hope Fades Away. The hopes Of the Illinois rooters had been dashed to the ground at the end of the first half. The score Of 20 to O was big surprise to the visitors, who had expected their team to make a good stand against the maroons. Chicago began to make successful use of the new plays at the start, and it was perfectly worked forward pass that Steffen got away for his 85-yard run and touchdown before the game had been going a minute Eckersall s toe proved to be in good condition, for his second attempt, drop kick, went squarely and true between the goal posts at the north end of the field. Steffen proved definitely, by his mag nifcent showing thruout the periods, that he has not been over-rated. He got away with good interference repeatedly and scored two touchdowns almost unaided. After Eckersall 3 drop kick had raised the score to 10 to 0, he made a wonderful lodging 13-yard run around Moynihan for his second touchdown. With the ulini hopes broken, Steffen made possible an other touchdown by taking the ball to the 5-yard line, from where Finger was pushed over for touchdown, making a total Of twenty-five points. Slaughter Goes On. The final period completed the dig comfture Of the visitors. Scarcely had the half started when Steffen came to the fore with another touchdown from q long run. Twice more in succession did the maroon half score on sensational runs before he left the game. Finger and Templeton did the Score, q Chicago saes,IS s., Illinois 0. The lineup: ..
