YALE SCORES 21 POINTS. ROOME CARRIES BALL OTER WESLEYAN LINE THRICE. MiddIetown Men Shut Out~-AH YaIe’s Chances Presented by yisitors-For- and FutiIe-Harvard Defeats Bow doin 10 to o in Poor Match--Crimson Gets Two First DOwns-Princeton Rolls Up 22 Points on Stevens--The other Games. Yale’s champion football eleven of last season made its stage entrance yes- terday upon the gridiron as the last of the big universities to open it’s playing season. Its victory of 21 points, shut ting out Wesleyan, surprised the Yale followers in many respects. All of Yale’s points were made on chances presented by Wesleyan, who gave Yale the ball three times less than twenty five yards from the Wesleyan goal and all Yale had to do was to work it to the posts by old-fashioned rushing. In every case Roome was called upon to do the line-forcing and he registered the three Yale scores. Yale’s fourth score, goal from placement, was an other present from Wesleyan. Wood head kicked high and short from the Wesleyan ten-yard line and Knox se- cured a fair catch at the Wesleyan forty yard line. He kicked goal from placement, rounding up the Yale total to 21. Forward and double passes were fre- quent, and Yale failed to make one work for a gain. The only gain re- corded by Yale on a play made possible by the new rules was on a side kick which Jones lifted outo to Overall and he scooted forty yards. Moore and Van Tassell worked a forward pass for Wesleyan, netting thirty-yard run, and taking the ball to the Yale thirty yard line, where the Methodists were held. This was the only occasion they threatened the Yale goal The lineup was as follows; l Yale. Positions Wesleyan. | Burch, OVerall .’..’s.,’S So2A, 11ei5 AltoiA Left End Forbes (captain). YALE 21; WESLEYAN, o. :Journal Sneoia1 Sarvica New Haven, Oct. Ain short. but exciting contest, replete with incidents Of the most spectacular and hair-raising variety. Yale ran up 81, points against Wesleyan g lighter, but fast and clever team. It is doubtful if the old rules ever contained so much to keep the spectators on their feet. Organized cheering was for the most part forgotten in the successive bursts of spontaneous applause as sensation followed sensation. And when during the first half, Quarterback Moore Of the Wesleyan, from behind his rush line, with a sudden swinging pass, shot the ball over the heads Of the entire Yale team, while the Wesleyan right flank flashed down the field until there vas a breathless stiffness, followed as Right Halfback Van Tassel turned, caught the ball and was instantly | slammed down in his tracks for 20 yard gain by such an ovation as scarce | ly ever before greeted a visiting team at Yale field. ft’was in some respects the prettiest play of the game. After the first few minutes of play today it was fairly evident that Yale had the superior team, and she rushed Wesleyan all over the field for big gains. The lineup: . | 1aie- POSITION.
