All attempts TO en- .;-o,e .,e ends were equally unsuccessful 7ha game however. despite the fact that there was no scoring, was by far the best exhibition ~ xoo+hau seen In New-York this year Even The Weather Bureau seemed TO realize that IL was time for football, and instead OF the neat OA q week ago, q cool northwest breeze made the spectators turn Up coat collars. and sent those who had left overcoats at home stamping ABOUT with chattering teeth. The ideal October afternoon brought goodly number of enthusiasts to the park to watch the game and cheer the teams. No special arrange nent had been made for the transportation OF the crowd, and when they all tried 70 90 home at once the facilities were overtaxed The subway station at 157th-st. and Broadway was Blocked for half an hour by the crowd that tried to board the trains. The rooters for Columbia took up position in the west stand, where they made the usual amount of noise. On the other side Of the field dfty followers OF Wesleyan tried 10 make up for lack OF numbers by strength OF voice. Scat teIed here and there were the pretty girls that mark the advent Of the football season, some wearing the Red and Black OF Wesleyan and others radiant IN the Blue and White Of the New-York institution. The game was marred by only one unpieasant incident. Near the close Of the second half Armstrong broke through the Wesleyan line and made a run of forty yards before ne was stopped by the Wesleyan end. After Armstrong was clearly down. Bailey. OF Wesleyan. came running I’D and kicked Armstrong in the stonsch The latter was taken from the field unconscious and revived after ten minutes The referee at once ordered Bailey from the field. As he left some Of the Columbia players struck him Coach Morley interfered, but not before the Wesleyan player had received severe drubbing. The police finally brought the war ring factions to order. Bailey escorted from ,.le grounds. while the people in the grandstand Missed. The game was marked by straight line plunges by the Columbia backs, who at times had no difficulty in piercing the Wesleyan line Yves !eysn on the other hand made little progress through the Columbia forwards, but scored some good gains by end runs. Near the close Of The first half il looked though the Red and Black would score. The bali in the centre Of the field when Hampson went around right end, and, before Donovan stopped him. had placed the ball on Columbia’s 15-yard line. The next play Melted two yards ana another made II nrst down. But here Columbia held for downs. shd the ball was punted out of danger Al least once during the game fumbling cost columbia Just after the game began ire Blue and White obtained the ball on wesleTans 4o-yard line. Armstrong and Hodgkins carried 1t through the line by straight plunges until they were within fifteen yards of the Yves Ieyan goal Then Donovan missed the ball. which went 70 Wesleyan. The Columbia backs seemed TO play IN streaks At times they would 20 through for continuous gains of three TO five yards in this way they would carry the ball twenty or twenty-five yards when couple of slow starts would give Wesleyan the chance to hold them for downs one OF the features OF the game was the way IN which Van Surdaur ran back punts for Yves cyan When the ball came his way he ran with hgntni7g speed sometimes lodging several Coinmnia players. Those who have said that donovan is not q nervy quarterback changed this opinion near the close of the second half He caught the bail on a punt and threw him selt completely over the head of the Wesleyan end he landed on his back and before he could recover himself was downed. On the part Mo-, he carried the ball ten yards on q ouart.rbacl run. ~ 0i “e0A Wesleyan was the first team tn AMMAN ~, .hA field. The line looked heavy but the becl,s 49, light and showed up fast in regular practice The halves were twenty and fifteen r,gr,,saa each The Blue and White seemed n - 81 better condition than WESLEYAN for Will e. team from Middletovn needed much Tine c,,t there were few occasions when Columbia nes6s5 time.
