EASY FOR BLUE. The Sons of IchabOd Smother Emporia College. Defeat Presbyterians By Score of 80 to 0. TOO HEAVY FOR THEM. This Is the Explanation of Captain CulbertsOn. Coach OutIand Not Satisfied With Washburn. Had Plenty Of Ginger, However, He Says. 90 HEAVY FOR THEM. Washburn college stood up Saturday afternoon and made a grade of “A” and score of SO in It’s first recitation of the season, held in the presence of the football representatives of the College of Emporfa. In stating ahat the Emporia representatives We’re present; the story of their connection with the affair is pretty thoroughly described. They tried hard; they took hard knocks cheer fully: they battled their best sor the crimson and white: but they were simply outclassed in weight, speed, and training. Em2oria’s team is just lit tie above the Topeka high school class. Just a year ago yesterday. on Sen tember 80, 1904, Washburn went down to E2nporia and beat the same college it defeated yesterday by a score of 10 to 0. Perhaps Emooria’s team was little stronger last year than this, but it is certain that Washburn is stronger than it was at this time a year ago. The work is further advanced: the team shows more speed; there is more spice, dash and ginger in every lineup. On paper the WaShburn team does not look as formidable as it did last year; in the field it is considerably more fierce. Captain Culbertson, of Emporia, says: Our team was weakened by the loss of Parkman, 100 pound man, Lehman, a $50 FOUNDER. and Marble, a 1870 pounder. Parkman and Lehman are out on account of injuries; Marple is not playing this year on account of his heavy class work Washburn is too heavy for us: our line could not effective, for many of our Dunts were blocked. We had relied on punting to hold down the score” Coach John Outland of Washburn c & very ragged; there was not the team work I like to see. We had by far the best Of it in weight. Our boys went | into the game with plenty OF ginger, and that’s 4 good sign Manager Stahl of Washburn has an explanation he wants to make. He says: I’VE promised to start the game at $3.50 sharp, and Washburn was ready to start at that time. The Emporia team arrived late on the field; this + delayed the opening kickoff. Wash burn is going to do its part to start games this fall promptly on time; unfortunately We can’t control our opponent’s teams. There was a crowd of about 500 people out at the game which for the curtain raiser of the season was very good. The Washburn rooters warmed up to their work and gave the team enthusiastic support. The medical school was represented by a strong delegation of Ioud-vOiced doctors-inembryo, and the laws We’re also dong their share of the yelling. The second half of the game waS played in a heavy rain storm which din’t hurt the players nearly as much as it did the millinery in the bleachers. Most of the crowd took refuge in the covered grand stand at the end of the gridirOn. There were no serious injuries on either side. Edison and Yeoman Of the Emporia team, sustained cuts on the heads, which made them look good deal worse than they felt. Sharp of Washburn went out with a wrenched ankle which may keep him / on the sidelines for some weeks. There was no wrangling; everything was For Washburn. it is hard to COM mend one of the players without TAX ling a pot-shot at the whole outfit. They all went in hard; they played / hard because upon the showing made / in this game depended good deal the line uD of the first squad for the big games to come. Williams and Hill showed that they have improved over / last season; Williams is a whirlwind, land no rnista Ike. Tice handled the ball well at quarter. Ware. the new I guard seems to be the man needed for 4 that place. He weighs 100, and played an aggressive game, breaking through I the line repeatedly. He does not back up the line as we’ll as Brown. the vet eran at the other guard Piatts the / new center, played like 4 tiger; he was entirely too much for King. and smashed the EmDoria line on almost every sCTimmage. White was fully up to the advance notices as haIfback. and the big end runs of the day go to his credit. Smiley also played well at half and Johnson as sub-centers went in hard. Munford and Haughey at the | ends did not let anything get past them. Hartzell who took ShafpS place at tackle in the second half. f celebrated his entrance to the game / by breaking through the line. block ing a punt, picking up the ball and running 40 wards for touchdown. For Emporia the big end of the work was done by Edison and Captain + Culbertson. If EmDoria had a team / of EidsOns, it would be a bad prOposition for any team to tackle. In summarizing the game, it might be said that Emporia made its five / yards only onece, when Edison broke through and gained just that distance. / Washburn Dunted repeatedly, and SO Emporia had plenty of chances to show its skill on offense. but it was powerless. It usually lost ground in It’s three downs and Dunted. When ever the EzmDOria line held, which was seldom. sCulbertson punted well. but he didn’t have a fair show The Wash burn men were on him too quickly. Details Of the Play. 1t was agreed to play halves of 20 and Is minutes. 2. c. Quigley and DR.. r. B. Stewart acted as officials. Thompson and a. Haughey were lines men; Prof. W. A. Harsh barger held the watch. Washburn won the toss and took the south goal Emporia kicked off. 4 Culbertson sent the ball to Hill on the 20 yard line. Hill carried it back fo : the 81 yard line. Edison tried to tackle Hill. and got his head cut Williams Dunted on the second scrimmage to EmDoria’ : 20 yard line. and the Wash burn ends went down the field SO fast that they downed Gull bertson in his tracks. Emporia tried . thrice to gain. and failed. Culbertson
