The midshipmen surprised every. body and even themselves on Saturday afternoon in the football game with Pennsylvania State College, in which the later were defeated by the middies by the score of 30 TO 3. The visitors made plucky fight, but the middies took the lead in the first half by two goals dropped from the 30 yard line by Norton. the quarterback. The middies were exceedingly anxious to win the contest, and the result pushes the midshipmen a couple of pegs forward in their hopes against West Point. The game was exciting & and interesting from start to finish, except for little SLOW play at times, but the result was little in doubt until the locals scored q second touch down in the last minute of play Penn State counts the Naval Academy as one of its biggest games of the year, and they started in confident of winning. At the beginning things looked their way for a while. Just after the first kickoff Howard punted for the Naval Academy, and Penn, through several line plunges and an occasional short-end run, made a steady advance toward the locals goal The pigskin finally rested two yards from the coveted mark, but the mid. dies presented stubborn defense and held for downs and punted out of danger. Shortly after the middies got the ball on a tumble on their 49, yard line, and on the next play Crazy was sent through the line for 30 yards be fore being finally downed. This brought the ball in good position in front of the posts. and after two more rushes, Norton, who has developed into a splendid drop kicker, sent one between the posts from the 80 yard mark Again before the close of the 20 minutes of play he duplicated this performance from the same distance though at more difficult angle. The second half saw the visitors on the offensive ut the start, but they failed to gain and punted. The middies then advanced toward the goal. A total Of 40 yards was made on line plunges, and from the 1-yard mark Doherty was showed over, but fumblsd. Whit ing, however, recovered the ball for a touchdown and Norton kicked goal. Just after this Penn made her first score ON a goal from the 25-yard line by Morscrip. Penn got the ball again after an exchange of punts had beer made, and ON a fake pass Morehead ran 40 yards for a touchdown. Nor Grip failed at goal. The run was the most spectacular play of the game. With but one minute remaining TO play, the middies scored another touchdown after carrying the ball from midfield, Doherty being showed through tackle for four yards.
