Saturdays Contests More Even Than Those of Previous Games This Season THE lowA-NEsRAskA GAME It Was the Most Important of Those Played in State and university’s Showing Was Fairly satisfactory Michie an Minnesota Game Leaves Championship Undecided. Ry R. A. Cook. | i’S ~ ~. NfSOAs’ Special 20 Times Republican Iowa city, Nov. Saturday was q day of more even contests than have been he’d on the football gridiron be- | fore this year. Most of the important games. too, had both teams scoring points. In the state Iowa and Nebraska both scored. Cornell and Grinnell both scored. and Simpson scored or Drake. altho her score was only q small two points on safety. | In TIL. west outside Of the state Minnesota and Michigan scored, Wis consin and ChtcaEo Illinois and North | western Hanover scored on Rose Polytechnic. Wesr Virginia on Ohio Franklin on Wabash. North Carolina on Kentucky, and West Virginia on Ohio. In tie east Carlisle scored on Harward. snd WESLEYAN on Dartmouth. The wa-Nebraska game was the most important In the state Saturday and was very Closely contested, both state university teams playing their bsst football. THE game does not leave Iowa feeling as tlowncast over the resuit AZ. would ordinarily be the case Two OF Nebraskf.’s touchdowns were made On fluke runs of eighty and forty yards by Bender, her quarterback while lowa’s touchdown was earned on straight football. Then. too, Iowa felt “a, y,1,r, ciro ~ in the first half ami in the second half of the game up to the time that Jones was put out OF the contest by INJURY. The clay was almost wholly in Nebraska’s territory, save for the last three minutes OF the game. which tends to support the Iowa feeling that the score should at least have been even. Nebrasgka had better tackles, and. after Jones retirement. better backs. AIT center and guard, Iowa was superior and at ends, the playing was stand off. Cornell s,,cs~s.s, treat i.7-rovement over her work of the two weeks last ‘oast in her game with Grinnell. The alternate sconng OF the teams gave game most satisfactory to spectators. 1t wsts unfortunate that darkness require1 the calling OF the game before the end OF the second half. Drlke university showed great i’m provtment in her game with Simpson. Coach Reids team had been playing excellent football and a defeat to the tune OF 45 to 2 is certainly one which entities great credit to the victory. Anles played an excellent individual Y1nL Ay of n the state university team by the excellemit score OF tw.enty-three to nothing. The game In the west to which all eyes turned was the Michtgan-Minnesota game OH Northrup field. Here was Il battle ct giants, in which each came Off with llonors almost equal. A great team ana a great coach must Minnesota and DIR. Williams hereafter be hailed, IL, indeed, they have not been so hailed before, for nothing less than the best would hold the great Michigan team of The great Yost to q tie score. Michigan has been the champion of the west for Two years and it would require defeat to take the honors from her this year She will probably 60 und efeated thru the rest OF her schedule and remain thu, champion this year, but Minnesota must be remembered very close to Michigan In the talk of cham pions this year. Chicago defeated Wisconsin in a game which shows how much Stage needed Eckersall this year. Three drop kicks to one touchdown makes luck look very hard to the Wisconsin root ers Northwestern defeated Illinois by a close score and earned the right to a further run for the western champion ship. Prlnceton’s defeat Of Cornell by the Overwhelming score of A to shows the strength of Princeton this year. Cornell really expected to win the game over the Orange and Black. Prince tor should play stronger game against Yale q week from next Saturday than Harvard will the following Saturday. Harvard’s showing against. the Indians. while showing considerable reserve power, is not very encouraging to those who have been looking for q big brace by the Crimson. West Des Moines high school met defeat by the fast Grinnel team Sat uiday Grinnell played with strength that shows that any high school will have hard work to take the state laurels away from her. Marshalltown did excellent work against Capital Park and Independence played plucky game against the Iowa scrubs.
