CHICAGO PLAYS BETTER GAME. Stages Men Defeat. Illinois In Hard Fought Game. Fought Game. CHICAGO, Oct. 24.-Chicago showed a highly encouraging Improvement over last Saturday in todays football game with the University OF Illinois, and defeated the latter brilliantly, Is to 6. All of the touchdowns were made on long runs, two possible by fumbles. A notable feature of the game was the fact that DESPITE the desperation with which both sides PLAYED but one penalty was inflicted. That was when Chicago, when within 20 yards of Illinois goal in the second half lost 10 yards for offside play. Chicago won the toss and for half an hour straight football kept the ball safe distance from both goals Then Burrows funbled and Rothgeb, who played a star game for the boys from CHAMPAIGN ;scooped up the Il bali l on Chieago’s 50,yard kicked goal. Chicagos detection was deep, but moments later Eckersall, who has a habit of going 400, yards in 10 Sec line and by skillfull use of his interference and a fierce burst of speed, which carried him like a flash past three would be tacklers, he ran doYn the field for Chi next to electrify the crowd. Illinois right end was boxed and Ivison made the 20 yards to goal without hindrance. Roth geb, in the second half, marred his brilliant work by tumble on his own 40 yard line, Catlin capturing the ball and making “a touchdown. Ellsworth converified all three OF ChlcdgO’S tOuchdownS into goals. ThesWeather was nearly perfeet and 10000 people saw the game, which was played on Marshall field. The lineup: Chicago. Illinois. |MAR0ONS PICK Up Chicago Stock Rises Again as Resuit Of Her Victory Over Illinois. Five Big Nine Teams Are Still I’m defeated Badgers Show Up Well. .s Chicago’s defeat Of Illinois was the important event in the football world Saturday. Many good judges Of foot ball had predicted a victory for Wood ruff’s men, altho a few insisted that Chicago had plenty Of latent strength if it could be developed. The marOOns have shown that they are still in the running and that their form in the game with Northwestern did not indicate their true strength. Whether there are championship pos sibilities in the team is another queston. Yost of Michigan says Stage has a wonderfully strong bunch OF men. If they improve as fast from now on as they have in the last week, the championship Is not an impossibility, but until the maroons pass a tanned Saturday, critics will be slow to replace them in the same class with Minnesota and Michigan. 80. II Chicago beats Wisconsin Saturday they must be considered in the front rank. This week will tell the fate OF Stages men, as Of many other teams. Wisconsin tried to show that her big score against Beloit was not huke by running up 81 points on the Knox team. True, Knox scored, but ON a tumble by substitute badger back Wisconsin stock must be rated trif1e higher than before, but the ability to score freely on small teams does not always mean great strength: The Wis consin- Chicago game this. week is a very doubtful proposition. Northwestern’s score against Gin cinnati means nothing, as there Is no way Of Judging the Ohio teams strength. The real strength of the purpie will appear Saturday, when McCormacks men meet Illinois. Those who saw both teams play Chicago say they are evenly matched.
