COLUMBIA,S GOOD VICTORY. Two T0uchdOwns Az ainst Amherst. the First Right at the Start. at the Polo Grounds yesterday afternoon by q score of IL to o. Bill Morley, Columbia 8 coach. was about the happiest man in Morning side Heights last night. for it has always been his ambition to produce an eleven that should defeat Harvard. That has been impossible since he became COACH as Columbia and Harvard have not met, but in beating Amherst he came near TO it. as Amherst only week ago was victorious over Harvard. II was a game of specta cuar interest, especially as regards the first touchdown. which came in less than fifteen seconds Of play. Amherst muffed the kickoff and the ball rolled over its goal line, Apparently the Amh erst men We’re Ignorant OF the rules. for they paid little attention to the pigskin. and 30 gave Stangland. who was sprintng e down the field an opportunity to fall on the ball, feat which he accomplished to good effect for a touchdown. Jones kicked the goal. The score was made 40 quickly that Amherst scarce knew it had occurred. That score marked the Purple and White s down fall. 1t gave Columbia confidence in its own ability. and to certain extent took the heart out OF the visiting players. After that first tally Amherst never accomplished anything that seriously menaced Columbia’s goal Only once in the first half did she gain her distance. and only three times in the second period, The ball WAS ty-fve yards The Blue and White. to the vast delight of her followers showed her real calibre and played football that out clt.ssed her opponent in every department of play with the possible exception of punting Columbia yesterday had a team in the fullest sense OF the word. There were no brilliant stars of individual merit OH whom to depend. II was Il case Of dependence on every man for victory, and every man did his duty. The interference formed with precision. and never, as in past games, left the runner to fight out his battle alone The line men presented an almost invulnerable front, and nearly every time closed in on the opposing runner and held him for no gain. or at most a slight one Bishop was strong at end, never yielding for an advance around him. Duell at the other end proved less able He was often boxed, and had IL not been for Smiths splendid defensive work more gains would have been made around the local teams right end. Columbia fumbled three times and Amherst twice in line plays. Both teams funibed often In catching punl7 but this was very excusa BILE In view of the wet ball and slippery field Amherst tried to work trick plays but Smith, Fisher and Jones nailed them for loss. Colu mbia and Amherst were each penaized eighty yards for holding. Columbia lost twenty yards by ofsid play and Amherst ten. Each team failed at a goal from the field. Columbia did all her scoring in the first half. playing absolutely defensive game IN the second period and puutns at every opportunity, Amherst and Columbia we’re represented by good contngens of students and there was plenty Of cheering and singing by both crowds About $500 saw the game, among whom was President Butler of Co. lumbia.
