VIM LOSE OR DRAW Five Conference Titles Go on Line Saturday NOW THAT ALL THE preliminaries are over, Saturdays football could determine most Of the intercollegiate conference and league champions. And, presumably answer one or two bowl-game questions. Could be that five titles will be won or shared-Atlantic Coast Conference, Ivy, Big Six, Big Eight and Big Ten For real economy, try the Big Four, when and if it’s put on the MARKET. Maybe it’s about high time that more attention was focused on the Ivy League. and this week it’ll be Yale-Harvard and Princeton-Dartmouth. Only the Yales are out OF the picture completely, but they could decide the whole thing. On their home base, Princeton’S Tigers have only to turn back last years unbeaten champion, Dartmouth, and it’s all theirs with a 81 league record. But let the Indians win, and Harvard defeat Yale, and it’ll 20 to the Crimson with SILL. If the winning combo Saturday is Dartmouth and Yale it’ll be a dead heat between the Tigers and Indians. NO MATTER WHICH WAY the foot Volved. But Saturday definitely is a crucial day for the Rose Bowl fathers, who by now must be resigned to sort of Second-class attraction on January l. The Big Six, which has formal handle too difficult to remember and not worth looking up, was supposed to have an auto matte title repeater in Southern California at the beginning of the season. use struck historic blow for Pacific Coast football last year with perfect 10-game record during the regular season, and the first I’M challenged No. National ranking since the big wire services began conducting the silly polls. (They went on to beat Wisconsin for the Roses, 42–37) But the Trojans, even with 26 letter men back, managed to get bumped off by Washington within the Big Six, and by Notre Dame and Oklahoma outside of it. Then Washington’S HuskieS, after losing their first three games, came on big. Until last week, Washington seemed a cinch to wind up in Pasadena for the third time in five years. SOMEHOW THE HUSKIEs were shut out by UCLA in 14–0 decision that’s still hard to believe. UCLA, beaten seven times, had contrived only one other victory all season. That was over Stanford, also a Seven-time loser. So on Saturday it’s USC-UCLA, both with 81 Big Six records, and Washington
