more and more, it has degen- Grated into a grudge match. At the time he announced 1864 would be the last game. at least for the time being, Techs Bobby Dodd insisted that hard feelings b between the two schools had nothing to do with the decision. But this thing has been brew ing for so long, it seems that sooner or later things might pop wide open at a game between these two. There’s been an underlying feud for years over charges that Alabama was recruiting athletes that Georgia Tech had to sidestep for academic reasons. Techs Complaints 1t seems that most OF the complaining has come from the Tech side. In 1860, after Alabama came from behind in the closing Sec onds with field goal to beat Tech 1915, there were howls that the key pass which set up the field goal went t Ga man who had stepped out of bounds. The next year, 1861, was the year of the highly publicized Darwin Holt-Chick Graning in cident in which Holt, an Ala bama linebacker, crushed the jaw Of Graning, a Tech half back, with an arm smash. Ala bama officials ignored Tech demandS that Holt be disciplined. Last year, when Tech upset high-ranking Alabama 7–6 and broke the Crimson Tides 27game unbeaten string, there were few penalties but Tech end Ted Davis was thrown out of the game for protesting an officials call to vehemently. Reaction This Year This was the same Davis who this year left the squad after kicking an Auburn player. Many persons feel that Davis would not have had to miss the last five games of this season if Tech had not been so accusing after the Holt-Graning episode two years ago. This past Saturday, Alabama beat Georgia Tech 27–11 by stopping fourth period Tech drive and then scoring two touchdowns in the closing min uteS. On the field, it was a clean, hard-fought contest. But Tech supporters felt they had gotten the short end again. They insist that fullback Jimmy Barber did indeed make a crucial first down on a 4th-and-one play at the Alabama “a. They insist that proper placement Of the football by the official would have given the Engineers, behind 14–11 at that point, the first down and the lift to carry them to victory. That’s the way its been 60 ing. It’s hard to see how continuing the series could result in other than a worsening of relationS between the two schools. But it has been one of the ma tons most noteworthy series and it is a shame that a conciliation could not have been reached before things got out Of hand.
