4eads-Up Redskins Defy Law Of Averages WIN LOSE OR DRAW West Coasts F football Muscles Are for Real FELLOW NAMED C. R. SMITH, who owns an airline, rolled out one of his TOTS for the week end, filled it with top Air Force brass, Congressman and smattering of rich but democratic newspapermen and flew to Colorado Springs. Object: To admire the Air Force Academy’s spanking new $3.5 million Falcon Stadium, which was dedicated in appropriate ceremonies. There was only one flaw. The Air Force team unfortunately opposed Oregon. And in the breathtaking setting-plains stretch ing out in one direction and snow-capped Pixies Peak opposite proved the resurgence of West Coast football is for real. It was Webfeet, s.; Falcons, 20. Never before this season have the Falcons seen so many top-flight backs as Oregon sprung loose, beginning with Mel Renfro, Larry Hill and half dozen others. Only Texas, No. team in the land, had beaten the Webfeet, and new respect for the Longhorns was born. “And Oregon isn’t even the best on the West Coast” our Pacific operative in formed us. Unless it’s California, we haven’t got weak club” TO BE SURE, 1T WASN’T an all conquering Saturday for the Far West. UCLA came cropper against Pittsburgh when the Partners improvised a two pointer after bad center pass and won, 8–6. But as they’ve done all season, Far Western teams more than held their own. Five years ago the Coast teams were patsies, especially for Big Ten powers. The Rose Bowl had become Joke. The representatives Of the old, defunct Pacific Coast Conference invariably were overmatched. It’s somewhat different now. Washington State licked Indiana Saturday, 21–15, to remain unbeaten. Stanford had beaten Michigan State. Washington had thrashed Illinois and tied Purdue. Southern Cal knocked off giant in Duke, routed Southern Methodist and white washed Iowa, TO. No team was expected to lower the boom on Ohio State this season, but UCLA did 1t in It’s opener, 81. (Were the Buck eyes softened up for Northwestern’s victory Saturday, Last time the national rank ings appeared, three Far West schools washington, Southern Cal and UCLA-were among the top eight, a historic and unprecedented accomplishment. UCLA PROBABLY WILL LOSE rank this week, but Washington was a solid 14-C winner over Stanford, Southern Cal rompec over California, 1875, and perhaps Oregon will move up. The voters could do worse If such Is the case-or even If Oregon
