Irish, Orange Still at Odds On Result Ch1CAGO, NOV. 10 NAR) - Notre Dame has a 17–15 victory over Syracuse in last Saturdays controversial football game, but Syracuse is claiming a 1914 victory over the Irish. Commissioners Bill Reed of the Big Ten and Asa Bushnell Of the Eastern College Athletics Conference yesterday issued a joint statement that the game officials erred in allowing the Irish an extra play after time ran out. On the play Joe Perkowski booted a 41-yard field goal to wipe out the 1914 Syracuse lead and give Notre Dame a 17-l5 triumph” Notre Dame shunted aside the commissioners statement as ambiguous and illogical. :” Syracuse Athletic Director Lew AndreaS says: we believe absolutely Syracuse won the game, 15-I4.” That’s the way matters stand. But Walter Byers, executive director of the Nation al Collegiate Athletic Associaton, said the matter should be settled by the institutions in volved in consultation with the commissioners and Gen. Bob Neyland, Tennessee athletic director and chairman of the NCAA Rules Committee. The Rules Committee, Byers said, is the final authority on interprobation of the rules. Syracuse had hopes that the NCAA’ would rule on the mat ter. But according to Byers’ statement, this is not the NCAA’s problem. Notre Dame is in no mood to concede the victory to SyracuSe in the manner which Cornell did to Dartmouth in the 1910 season. In that game Cornell apparently had won, 7–3, by scoring a touchdown on the games final play. Two days later Referee Red Friesell discovered he had permitted Cornell a fifth down on which the game-ending touchdown was scored. Syracuse had a 1914 lead over Notre Dame when the Irish tried a field goal by Perkowski with three seconds to play. The attempt was short, but a roughing the kicker pen atty was called. Syracuse was penalized Is yards, although time had run out, and Notre Dame was given another shot. This time Perkowski made good.
