COLLEGE LINE By GEORGE HUBER In all the hubbub last week about Ernie Davis breaking Jim Browns scoring and yardage records at Syracuse, it was overlooked that Quarterback Dave Sarette also broke the school record for throwing touchdown passes. He tossed for two scores. his 10th and goth, passing the old standard of 10 set by Pat Stark of the 1873 elevens. Dick Drummond of George Washington is second in the country in yardage on kickoff returns, having brought b K eight kicks for $50 yards. The leader is Dick Mooney OF Idaho, with 365 yards in 10 returns. Drummond hardly has a chance to move up because a team has to be scored on before it gets a kickoff, except at the start Of a game or the second half, and CIV has been scored on only l6 times. Idaho’s goal has been banged about As times. When North Carolina went for the two-point conversion that beat Tennessee last week, 22–21. in the dying seconds, it was the first time this year the Tar Heels had gone for two. They tried it four times last year without one success. One publicity man in search ing for an angle is trying toe hard. Miami of Ohio is out OF the running In the Mid-Amerilean Conference race, but all i: mot lost. The Redskins, oul man says, now focus attenton on a bid for the mythical southwestern Ohio neighborhood title” Washington & Lee is aiming a bit higher, hoping to beat Sewanee Saturday for its 18th game without a defeat to break a school record set by the 1914-5 elevens. Sewanee was the last team to beat the Gen. erals, 1914, in 1859. But last year the Generals pasted Sc vance, 1878. Things are going so good fo1 W&L that last week while swamping Centre, the Generais tried something you hardly see any more, butts allowed by the rule book. That’s for the player catching a kickoff OF punt to punt it right back. The W65L man booted the ball back for 68 yards, and Centre was SC surprised it fumbled and W&I recovered on the II. They’re very happy down In the Southwest over Texas being named No. / football team ir this weeks Associated Pres; poll. They must have forgot ten what happened to the last couple or three Southwest Con. ference teams who were No. / Let’s go back to 1857 ano look at Bear Bryant’s Texa. !. ASzM team. 1t won eight straight and got to be No. / Next week it lost to Rice, 7–6 and the following week bowed to Texas. The week after that II wasn’t even in the top 20. And then there was South. ern Methodist in 1850. Tht Mustangs won their first five by big scores against gooC teams and deserved their No. ranking. And they went out anC lost four of their next five. : And Texas itself, in 194l. Th’ Longhorns were called tn, }. greatest team in Southwes Conference history. They wor : six in a row and seemed a shoe in for the Rose Bowl. Ther they lost to a mediocre Baylo team and likewise to Texai Christian. Duke played in thu Rose Bowl.
