Monday. October 2. 1861 Washington Huskies Run Over Illinois 20–7 CHAMPAIGN, III. R – Wash ington Huskies pushed across two first half touchdowns and then added the clincher in the fourth period on a 66-yard scoring run by fleet Charlie Mitchell as they defeated Illinois Saturday 20–7. Mitchell broke away on the first play from scrimmage after the Huskies had held the Illini deep in their own territory. Washington counted in each of the first two periods. Both times on short plunges by quarterback Kermit Jorgensen. Both times the Huskies went for the 2-point con- version. The first failed, but the second clicked when Mitchell gathered in a pass from Jorgen- sen in the end zone. Illinois, a green team which failed to generate any consistent momentum, scored with just 25 seconds left in the first half as quarterback Mel Romani hit Dick Newell in touchdown territory to cap an 80-yard march.
