MONDAY MORNING QUARzERBA(KS MARYLAND MARYLAND Team Gains Impetus From Clemson Victory In the preview of the Atlantic Coast Conference football season. a few weeks ago, the word here was to wait until after the Clemson game for an appraisal of Maryland. Now that the Terps have added a 24–21 triumph over the Tigers to the 14–6 victory over Southern Methodist, Coach Tom Nugent’s team appears to have the momentum for conference title contention. maybe going all the way. The Terps are still telling, but looked much sharper in the dramatic victory over the I’ll gers, when John Hannigan kicked a 23-ysrd field goal with eight seconds remaining. than in their eased-up victory over SMU. Quarterbacks Prove Mettle The principal reason for the hesitation over Maryland’s pros poets was doubt at the quarterback spot. But after two weeks of conference play. it is obvious that no team has two quarterbacks to match Richie Novak and Dick Sinner. Sinner. the rookie, has thrown 10 passes in two games and completed eight. Novak has completed 1S out of %. Novak looks like a new man. He shows a liking for carrying the ball and his play-calling is heady. Both Novak and Sinner give the impression that they’re the bosses. And neither is called on to play defense. The Terp quarterbacks have a remarkable record of Is COM ! pletions in 81 passes, but it is doubtful if they will meet an other team as woeful on pass defense as the Tigers. Nobody, ! the pro or college scouts or anybody else. could figure what Clemson was trying to prove on pass defense. The Tigers were virtually spotting / a first-down pass any time the Terps wanted to throw. / Receivers Lending Support OF course, Novak and Sinner . have been getting the necesssry help from their receivers, / with Jim Davidson. Gary Col . Inns, Hank Poniatowski, Ron .
