ACC Teams All Are PIoyinq League Games Saturday By MERRELL WHITTLESEY Star Staff Writer All Atlantic Coast Conference teams play within the confer ence this week, the only time this season the schedule is so arranged. Conference prestige suffered last week with Virginia’S win over William and Mary, and Maryland’s triumph over Southern Methodist the only victories. N. C. State lost by a point to Wyoming, Glenn son by four to Florida, and Wake Forest was routed at Baylor. The other game was Dukes conference victory over South Carolina. North Carolina was idle. Saturdays schedule: MARYLAND AT CLEMSON The Tigers have slight edge here because they’re playing at home. 1t is doubtful if there is a football crowd in the Nation more rabid than the Clemson fans. who still are high on their team despite the 21–17 loss to Florida. Maryland has more than it showed in the 14–6 victory oyer SMU, and is prepared to use it. One of the most encouraging points in the opening vic tory was Richie Novak’s performance at quarterback. He showed a new-found liking to carry the ball, his passing was excellent, and he had savvy. The Terps are sure to make more use of Gary Collins this week, whether he’s double, triple or quadruple teamed. AS an example of how Glenn son dominated the Florida game. it had II plays to the Gators Al. The Tigers are deeper than Maryland, and could have the best two full backs in the conference in Ron Scrudato and Bill McGuirt. The winner of this one will share at least co-favorite bill ing for the conference title. N. C. STATE AT NORTH CAROLINA – The Wolfpack, picked in the Nations top 10 in some of the preseason polls, is very likely to be o. after its first two games. The 1914 defeat by Wyoming included some weird occurrenceS, most of them against the Wolfpack, but it also produced some glaring weakness in the N. C. State offenSe and defense. AS some suspected, Roman Gabriel may have too much of a load to carry. N. c. State had seven Sophomores in the game on defense at one time. almost unheard of for a team moving in fast COM pany. Bright spots for the Wolfpack included the punting of Dave Houtz., who had a 46yard average despite a punt of l yard when he recovered a bad snap from center and mi raculously got the kick off. His other punts were of 83 “a quick kick, Sc and As yards. Tom Dellinger, the safety man, was outstanding with five unassisted tackles, five assists, a tumble recovery and pass in Perception. North Carolina, with its open date, turned up by beating the reserves, $50. The Tar Heels lack a player of Gabriels brillance, but may have too much balance for the Wolfpack. DUKE VS.. VIRGINIA – At last, after % games, Duke does not have to live down the fact that it was the last team that Virginia defeated. The Cavaliers beat Duke, 1912, in Sep tember, 1858, and their next victory was over William and Mary last week. 21–6. Coach Bill Murray of the Blue Devils said after his teams 7–6 victory Saturday night on a touchdown scored with two minutes to play that We’re going to have a hard time this year if South Carolima does not have a good ball club” Marvin Bass, coach of the Gamecocks, said it was the toughest defeat of his career. South Carolina gambled on oeIeIlSe ana won Tor 81 min utes, and this week the Blue Devils meet another defense minded team in Virginia. The Cavaliers were weary near the end of the William & Mary game. but it should be cooler in the Tobacco Bowl in Rich mond. Coach Bill Elias will have the Cavaliers higher than a kite, but Duke learned a lesson against the Gamecocks. Virginia might have better chance this week if Duke had won handily, as it figured to.
