  McGUIRT SCORES THREE Clemson HumbIes Wake Forest, 28–⁠7 WINSTON SALEM, N. c., Sept. “a (APO Sophomore Bill McGuirt scored three touch downs from in close and quarterback Lowndes Shingler provided the air arm as Clemson humbled Wake Forest, 2S-7, today in its opening bid for a third straight Atlantic Coast Conference football title. The rampaging Tigers broke a TT tie with three last-period scores. McGuirt, a 204-pounder from Lancaster, S. c., whom Coach Frank Howard had to shift from fullback to beef up the halfback position, powered over the goal line twice from a yard out and once from two yards away. He scored the first two touchdowns in the last period and in between he intercepted a Norman Snead pass on his own 25 to thwart a Deacon drive that threatened to tie the score. Shingler’s passes set up two Clemson scores. He hit Half back Harry Pavilick on a ST. yard play that carried to the Wake Forest 8 early in the fourth quarter. Two plays later McGuirt was over.
