COLUMBIA LIKE A STRAW. BROWN ELEVEN MAKE GAINS AT WILL AND WINS BY 2s TO o. / the Columbia warriors were swept down the field as they have not been in many a day. Brown simply outplayed Columbia at every point. and it only the shortening of the second half by nearly fifteen minutes that saved a worse defeat for the White and Blue. The first half was a full thirty-ive minutes. and the second a little less than twenty-five. The playing was Of sufficient time to fully demonstrate that Brown has good team this year and that the Columbia eleven has deteriorated most lamentably. Columbia played poorly al Princeton but she did even worse yesterday. During the battle Brown advanced the ball close to five hundred yards. while Columbia certainly did not advance the leather more than fifty dur ing the entire afternoon. Even Captain Weekes | SEE med out of sorts. and when Weekes is not himself Columbia hasn’t much to cheer about on the gridiron. The Brown athletes. trained TO the hour. jumped at their metropolitan rivals right the start and they never let up to the end which came with the lighting of the lamps on the nearby elevated road and the heights on Coogan’s Bluff. Brown banged through the centre. through the tackles and skirted the ends whenever she felt like it. bowling the Columbia men of supposed muscle whenever they got in the way. as if they were so many tenpins Only twice did Columbia show any real strength aggressive ness and only once did the local team have n chance To score. When that chance came in the second half Columbia apparently muddled With the ball on the Browns 1O-yard line, Co lumbia had a chance for a goal from the field, but the opportunity was allowed to slip. and the only chance to escape n whitewash was gone Columbia had repeatedly shown her inability to break through the Brown line TO gain around the ends and when the ball got as close to the Brown goal line every enthusiast on the grounds expected Captain Weekes at least 10 try for goal from the field. Possibly Weekes knew that his line would not hold for him. and that may have been the reason why he did not try it, 1t was clearly Coumbia’s only chance 10 score. BROWN LINE STRONG. The Brown line was a tower Of strength and Columbia could make no Roadway against II. The ends Schwinn and Russ. we’re iron pillars when Columbia tried TO pass them, and Column bia early in the game abandoned any idea OF ground gaining in those quarters. The Brown guards and tackles also did their work well. while the backs ploughed through the Column bia beef with the ease that an autoplough viii deve into rich loan topped by sweet clover. Hamilton Lynch and Barry played superbly, Lynch and Barry doing the plungng. while Hamilton went through the Columbia line MAX ing holes for the backs through which a on a bicycle might have ridden. Columbia was also outpunted and invariably lost ground on an exchange Of kicks. bia was rough and slow. Both sides lost ground for off side play While none Of the players were severely injured. twice :he game had TO be stopped so that ambitious players who were wrestling in the open could be separated Fistcuffs INDUCED in the line two three times. but little damage was done. HOW THE GAME WAS PLAYED. Brown won the toss and selected the south goal, with the wind at her back. Lynch kicked Off and Columbia Immediately tried the Brown line for gain. After exchange Of punts Brown began TO batter down the Columbia line. and, realizing her superiority at once. she played with confidence and dash right through the battle. After FIVE minutes Of play Brown got the bali and carried it down the field for touch down without once losing It. Hamilton, Bar ~ and Webb did the ground gaining and did it well, Hamilton making the touchdown. while Golfer kicked the goal There was an exchange of punts. but the ball was generally in Columbia territory. Barry made a Iretty for fifteen yards and Lynch pulled him along the ground for five more. her 4O-yard line for the second touchdown. Webb making the points. Golfer again kicked n goal, and Brown had lead OF II 10 q. Weekes twice had chance to show his sprint ing ability, but his weak ankle gave out each time, and he stumbled badly After changing sides Weekes punted and Crowen carried the ball back half a dozen yards. Barry Immediately went around the end for twenty yards, and Lynch followed with twenty more the next lineup. Columbia got the ball on her 4O-yard lire for holding but could do nothing with il. for il was in possession Of Brown a few minutes later. For a time Column bia seemed to brace, but the improvement did not last long for she was forced to kick on her J0-yard line. Brown eventually took the ball in mdield and began again to batter down the Columbia line. Sheehan Barry, Hamilton and Lynch made successful plunges. Columbia braced again and worked the ball up the field Weekes again punted, and Barry caught the leather Browns 40-yard line He was as slippery eel and. with excellent inter ference. he had little trouble in carrying the elled being fully seventy yards. the best run Of the day. Golfer kicked goal. and the half ended with Brown in the lead by II to o. The second half was largely a repetition OF the first in that Brown did not weaken and Column bia showed no improvement. Lynch added another touchdown to Browns list after four minutes play, and Golfer kicked the goal max ing the score % to D. Hamilton made the final touchdown. bringing the total up to ~ Lynch was led from the field slightly injured. For those games the Brown eleven should be in tn. best OF form. The next game will Le comparatively easy, and for the Dart mouth game the eleven should be at It’s hest. saturday night the students at Brown had celebration OF their own, beca use OF the victory over Columbia and this TOOK the form OF nightshirt parade, call on President Faunce, and a general demonstration OF college spirit that was interesting TO the spectators and amusing for all who witnessed the parade. ON OTHER FIELDS. Down at Cambridge Harvard defeated Penn on Soldiers Field I’m a game that was quite as much OF a victory for Penn as II was for Harvard. The Penn team was probably on the defensive the great er part OF the time. but at that IL PLAYED pluckily and well, twice bracing when a touchdown seemed inevitable and once holding the Crimson for downs on Penns Vineyard line The fumbling OF the Harvard backs was miserable and there was a decidedly poor idea OF foot ball shown by team that is assumed 10 be one of the two leading teams OF the country. OF this game an eyewitness writes: Soldiers Field at Cambridge was the scene of lively contest on Saturday last and Pennsylvania certainly opened the eyes OF the Harvard team and the spec tators. IL has always been said that the Crimson were very sportsmanlike in their athletics but many are inclined to think they failed TO show IL in Saturdays game. Time after time on eight occasions in all, freshmen were put on Harvards team when absolutely nothing was the matter with them while Pennsylvania played her men as they first lined up with two exceptions, only taking out a man when he was disabled. 1t was clearly case OF freshmen on the part OF Harvard against straight football OF Pennsylvania and even then the Crimson had all II could do TO win. The Harvard team also averaged ii pounds TO a man heavier than the and even at that great variance Harvard had her troubles with the Red and Blue line.

FOOTBALL HARVARD IS VICTOR Crimson Eleven Defeats Pennsyl. vania Although Winners Fun BILE Frequently. Bucknell Scores on Yale Through 8 Fumble-Brown Wins Game +. With Columbia. Cambridge. Mass, Nov. 10.--As was expected, Harvard defeated the University OF Pennsylvania on Soldiers field Saturday without difficulty. The score Of II to was about one-half of what it should have been as far the crimson was concerned. Four times Harvard was inside Of Penn sylvania’s twelve-yard line. but two fun bles, holding in the line. and a grand brace by the Quakers on their own three yard-line. kept the crimson from scoring additional points. There were other fumbles by Harvard during the game, not SO noticeable or so costly, but nevertheless sufficiently serious to make this a discouraging feature to crimson adherents. Except for a fine brace by Pennsylvania, during which the team made first downs, to the establishment Of the crowd, there was very little Of interest in the latter part of the contest, and the game ended with the ball in Harvards possession, as usual in Pennsylvania territory. he lipe-up
