Terps’ Scott Aims Toe AtNew NCAA Record Vincent Scott spent an extra 20 minutes yesterday practicing field goals in Maryland’s first workout since the 27–7 triumph over West Virginia, in which he booted three field goals Of 48, 38 and 81 yards. He was deprived of a fourth when an attempt from the 80 yard line hit the cross bar and rebounded into the end zone. II touchdowns come hard for the TerpS against Texas Saturday night in Austin, two Scott specialties could Offset a touchdown without an extra point. and three would over come any combination Of a touchdown and the one or two point try. Despite an emphasis on field goal kicking in colleges in recent years, the NCAA seasons record for a team is six. The new widened croSsbar is expected to increase fleld-goal attempts in college football this year. However, it wasn’t a fac tor in any of SCOTS boots. All four were true under the old standards, including the one that fell inches short. One just made it from a distance stand point. The other two left no doubt. Bothered by Ankle Injuries Scott was bothered by ankle injuries last year and kicked only one field goal in two at tempts. However. he had a perfeet 7-for-7 record in kicking extra points, a streak that was snapped when he missed his only try for a one-pointer against the Mountaineers. A point in SCOTS favor is that he is a good enough all-‘round football player to be the right end on the first team, and not a specialist which may require a dead ball or a time out to get him into the game. Scott booted four kickoffs , against the Mountaineers into the end zone, another went to the 3-yard line, and two others were just fair. However, Scott > is on the spot, as all of his kickoffs are expected to go into
