  This is the year, according to the timetable of the United States Air Force Academy, that the school goes almost” big time in college football. The academy would like to move in the same circles as Army and Navy. the other two service teams. Since its first class doesn’t graduate until next year, the academy has all its lettermen of last year back. Under Buck Shaw. the sophomore ’57 club had a g. 6–⁠1 record. This year, the schedule has been toughened considerably. but new Coach Ben Martin, a former Navy star and head coach at Virginia. has high hopes. His team started operations last night with a smoothly contrived 1915 triumph over Detroit, another team that hopes to make the step as a major power. Fine Passing Duo One thing is certain-if anyone is going to stop the academy, John Kuenzel and Rich Mayo, a pair Of passing fools, will have to be stymied. Kuenzel tossed for one touch down. set UP another with a pass and scored once himself Mayo passed for two scores. Four other major games were on last nights schedule. Texas defeated Tulane, 21–⁠2O. Georgia Tech rebounded against Florida State, Wisconsin whipped Mi ami, 300, and Denver turned back Utah State, 20–⁠8.
