ANNAPOLIS, Oct. 22.-The midshipmen showed today that they had not entirely lost the ability to play football. defeating the University of Pennsylvania 10 to s. The navy played by far the best game yet exhibited by the annapolis team, and scored in each hslf. In the first, McNair carried the ball over, and in the second half Wilson, who was given a trial on the first team for the first time, made the touchdown. McNair was I’M successful in both efforts to kick the goal. Pennsylvania also scored in the first half ON touchdown made by center plunge. with Bennett carrying the ball. Gardiner kicked the goal. Gardiner was injured in the latter part of the first half and dropped out OF the game. His loss was greatly felt in the second half and his team could not score. Quakers Nervous. Pennsylvania went into the game in a determined but somewhat nervous condition. Fumbling lost them the game. They were at least as good as the locals in steady ground gaining, If not SUI perior. Time after time this character of good work was neutralized by absolutte inability to hold the ball. Captain Gardiner was the exception to this. His gains were regular and he held On to the leather The navy showed undoubted improve ment in today’s game. A new halfback, Wilson, was given trial today. He is apparently find. Wilson is the fastest Splinter in the Academy, and though rather light, is of stocky halfback build. He made several good runs today and played good, defensive game. Strasburger and McNair also showed Improvement in form, and Smith again demonstrated that he is one of the best quarterbacks in the country. The navy played a tackle back formation, but the tackle was not in the line of backs, as was Pennsylvania but ahead of it and to the side.
