AT MICHIGAN’s MERCY. Indiana University Defeated by the Score OF GO to %. Special to the Indianapolis Journal ANN ARBOR, Mich, Oct. n.-Michgan defeated Indiana by the score of 60 TO 0 to-day I’m forty-fve minutes OF actual play. Coach Phil King and Full Back Driver, of Wisconsin, watched Yost’s race horses from the side lines. Yost was wel-aware of the presence of the Badgers and moth ing but straight football was attempted President Angel, who seldom takes in athletic contests, was also a spectator Lawrence was easily the star of the day. His line-bucking was terrific and he was worked to finish on it. He kicked AL goals from nine of the touchdowns. MAX ing his total record TO date forty-twO out CT forty-three He retired in favor OF Jones just before the last touchdown. Maddox was another Michigan man who did great plunging. For Indiana, eleven ger put up a great defense and spoiled at least five runs which would have resulted in touchdowns. Michigans superiority in both offense and defense were fully demon strated Michigan was penalized three times during the game for holding. Line up: Michigan. Position. Indiana. Graver, Sterry. >. Sunerior weight and ability to replace every man who was tired or injured enabled Minnesota to defeat Belolt Saturday afternoon, the final score standing ~ to 0. Belolt, although outweighed ten or tifteen pounds to the man. put up a much faster and stronger game than any team Minnesota has met this year. The play of the visitors was in many respects revelation Their tackling was hard and low, their interference on end runs held tOReIneT SplcIlululS, dAit IASih AAA’S 1890 charged in vicious style AS long as they held their wind, the little badger men simply outplayed the gophers. Not until the first half was nearly up did Minnesota get the ball over. Beloit had been holding the gophers for downs or forcing them to punt, while their own offense, consisting entirely of end runs was very effective. 1t was SO effective in fact, that after five minutes play DR.. Will liams yanked Freeman and Davies out OF the lineup, and sent in Van Valkenberg and BOeckmann. The latter We’re more successful in stopping Beloits dashes and during the rest of the first half Minnesota Just about held her own until with barely a minute Left to play Bidlake was pushed over for a touchdown after Minnesota had rushed the ball down the field for fifty yards. Beloit might have saved even this score if Smith had punted on the third down. Taken as a. whole the exhibition given by Minnesota would have been amusing if, in view Of the hard Nebraska game appreaching, it had not been pathetic The line men failed to charge on defense, and the halfbacks allowed themselves to be boxed on nearly every play. Van Valkenburg was the exception to this rule. He broke through repeatedly, and downed the Beloit runners behind the line. Lafans sandwiched one or two spectacular tackles in between a number of plays in which he failed to distinguish himself. BeIoit Plays Better Football. In speed of play, in tackling, in general defensive work. in team work, and in fact in almost every department of the game Beloit showed herself superior to Minnesota as long as her mems wind lasted. Weight told in the second half, and the BelOit men were plainly groggy from the terrific pounding they had received. Yet at the very end of the game, with half the men Keeling in their tracks, and the rest scarcely able to rise from the ground. Beloit held Minnesota for downs on her fifteen yard line. 1t was 4 rare exhibition Of grit. Minnesota’s poor play is excusable in part since Knowlton, Flynn, Rogers and Harries, four of the most reliable men on the team, were absent from the lineup With Rogers and Gray at the ends, an6 with Knowlton backing up the line Belofts end runs would not have been so eff fective. The showing Of the line men however, was the most discouragng fea. ture Of the game. There a sleepy listless air about their play and tota lack of aggressive fighting spirit, with one or two exceptions which will be noteC later. One of the Beloit men said very aptly in regard to the gophers’ tackles ‘‘They not only didn’t charge our line bu they seemed tickled to death because VIZ didn’t send any plays right at them” The offense of the Minnesota team wa. painfully slow. The interference often times held the runner back, instead O clearing the way for him. Individual, good work was done at times in advancint the ball. Bergen was the only consisten ground gamer in the first half, buckins the tackles in vicious style. Van Valken burg usually made his distance, and IRIS Held In the short time he was in the game showed good fighting spirit. Webster a center played fair game, once hurdlin, the line and blocking a punt on Beloit’ twenty yard line. Gray Needed at End. Gray at quarter ran the team with goof Judgment, and got into the interference, we’ll It is evident, however. that era, is needed much more at end than at quarter for none of the ends who PLAYED Sat urday showed anything like varsity class Tuck showed up better than either Free man or Boeckmann but lacks experience Boeckmann got down the field we’ll unde punts but generally allowed the rune to elude him when he arrived. Boeck mann did one good stunt in the secont half, however, when he overlook an, tackled Mills, who had a clear field TO touchdown. Thorpe played a fair game at fullbacl in the second half, but from the shown, OF the forwards Saturday, ‘‘Sunshine” i needed more In the line than behind it. For the Beloit team, the speedy half backs, Mills and McRae, played the cen trail roles. They ran with good judgment and their long dashes at times cause mingled admiration and Apprehension among the Minnesota rooters. Mills 4 the beginning of the second half pulled OF sixty-five yard stunt just inside Bergen His interference stuck together beauti fully and blocked off Gray and Lafans but Boeckmann finally got the runner Beloit’s end got down under punts mucl better than Minnesotas. and on offens they frequently put big Van Valkenbur and Lafans out Of the plays Detail of the Play. Smith opened the game by kicking of to Gray, who fumbled, but recovered tn lott got the ball for holding in the line bal; and ran 1t back fifteen yards. Be and punted behind the goal posts. Bid lake pulted out to Beloit’s forty-fi var line. Mills and McRae went at the end in turn, and advanced the ball ten yards when the gophers held, and Smith wa forced to punt Minnesota tried a serie .’‘‘‘‘‘‘ 1I1ij|iikil;;:rr psxH &&TMHNHHxW10 whof IL P$iee,
