Yesterday opened the football season of 1886 with victory for Yale over Wesleyan at the Yale Field The latter were lighter and in general poorer players than last year, none with the exception of Manchester rising above the average mediocrity of prepare tory team. The game began soon after 3 o’clock and Watkinson soon got the ball and made a touchdown from which he easily kicked goal. The rest of the first part Of the game was repetition of this, varied by touchdowns made by Beecher, Wallace and Corbin, all of whose united efforts raised the the new freshman half back, was given sew eral goals from touohdowns, but failed dis mally; Morrison and Corwin also made touch downs and Watkinson kicked a fine goal from the field. In this half the Yale eleven “took it easy” and only made 81 points, leaving the final score rs to Wesleyan’s 0. The playing of the eleven was not all that could be wished and their victory by no the utter insignifcance of their op, ponents is considered. Watkinson and Wallace played their usual fine game and Morrison punted well, but for the most part was not successful in running. Corbin, the | new center rush, played fairly well. Beside the necessity of a half-back whs can rur | through crowd the great need of the clever | is a capable back. At one time Durant al | lowed an easy ball pass him which was Sc cured by Wesleyan man who started fol the Yale goal with clear field before him and was only stopped by Corwins fleet run ming.
