The Wildcats, who won their last six games of 1853 with Joe Hardy at quarterback. had to play the entire last half without him. Later it was announced he had a sick stomach. Hardy completed only three of eight passes in the first half and had two intercepted. His relief, Del mar Hughes, a 19 year old sophomore, completed 13 of 90 Tatum said later he did not see much difference in Hardy and Hughes. 1t appeared for moment that Maryland was going to win by forfeit. for Kentucky was so late hitting the field that it prompt ly was socked with 10-yard penalty. But the Wildcats showed desire to play when they did appear and marched from their own 16 to midfield before Hardy and Dick Moloney messed UP pitchout and Mary lands Bill Walker wound. up with the ball. Terps Miss Field Goal. The Terps got close enough for Bielski to attempt field goal from the Al, but it was wide. Later Kentucky, with Howard Schnellenberger and Bradley Mills catching Hardy passes, marched to the Maryland Is, but then Hardy dropped back and threw the pass Tamburello intercepted. Jim Parsons threw the big block that helped Tamburello get away. 1t took the Terps five plays to score from the Kentucky 81, with Waller taking a deep pitchout from Boxold and scooting for the Score. Bielski missed the extra point. Following Bielski’s interception, it looked like Maryland might try for a field goal with fourth down and 8 on the Kentucky IT. 1t particularly looked that way on third down when Boxold went 3 yards on a keep in front Of the goal posts. But Charley hit Den mis- with a f1rst-down pass to the Kentucky five, and Boxold scored on third down from the one. Bielski made the second extra point try and George Albrecht booted the third between the posts after the Boxold-to-Dennis touchdown pass in the third Pc riod. Shipley Stops Threat. After Maryland made it 200, Hughes passing carried the Wildcats to the 8-yard line, where Dick Shipley crashed through and hit Hughes so hard he dropped the ball. Tom Nc Luckie fell on it back on the 20. Maryland came back with some smart ball-handling by Tamburello and first-down dashes by Albrecht, but incomplete passes ended the drive. In the fourth quarter Ken lucky drove back inside the 10, was penalized back to the 20 and Hughes passed to Mills for a first down on the 10. But Tamburello was there with his second interception. just before the gun, Dare ended Kentucky’s last threat by intercepting on the Maryland IS. Punters Come Through. | Tatum had been deeply concerned about Maryland’s punt ing, but Walker and Tamburello gave him a big lift. Walker kicked four soaring boots, one that died on the Kentucky s, and Tamburello’s biggest contr1bution was an adequate kick after the Terps had been penal lied to their own 8. Boxold, who chose to keep the ball more. than his recent predecessors at the quarterback spot. carried nine times for 35 yards. Albrecht accounted for 30 for the TerpS, one more than Waller. Governor Lawrence Wetherby presented Tatum with a Ken lucky colonel’s rank before the game. Jim said he appreciated it but hoped he didn’t leave without the ball game, too. He didn’t. MARYLAND.
