UebeI, Young HoIfbock, Leads Army in 2O-7 Defeat of Navy opened with George Welsh in the T-slot, shifted to John Weaver, and finally wound up with George Knots, little used all year. Knots was the best of the trio and the one who directed the 63-yard scoring drive. Navy Fails in Scoring Chance. Welsh was quarterbacking in the opening period when Navy got its first good touchdown shot on a freak play. 1t started as a pass, Welsh to Riester, but Uebel intercepted on his own 40 and ran 20 yards. AS he was chased toward the north sidelines, Uebel had the ball stolen from his arms by Jack Perkins, Navy tackle and big gest man on the squad. Perkins headed in the opposite direction and ran to Army’s g. yard line before he was pulled down from behind. But Navy muffed the opportunity. After Bob Craig drove to the 7, Navy drew a backfield- motion pen atty and finally lost the ball on a third-down pass that Welsh intended for End Don Fullam. Bell intercepted on the 2, ran to the 6. and Army punted out to safety. After nearly 10 minutes of the second period had elapsed, Army struck again, this time 60 ing 81 yards on eight plays. The big one was a long. leading pass from Vann to a sophomore end from Rochester, Don Holleder. Uebel Scores Again. Vann, a 20-year-old, 180- FOUNDER from Hamburg, N. Y, eluded the first wave of Navy pass-rusherS and had an option of running. Then he Spied Holleder slipping behind Craig deep in the Navy’s secondary and floated the pass to him. Holleder reached Navy’S 18 before he was brought down. But five plays later = Uebel carrying three times, Lodge twice-and its was 1870. Uebel doomed off right tackle to score easily. Army wasn’t faultless when it came to capitalizing on scoring opportunities. The Black knights got the ball just before the half when Lodge in tercepted a pass which Welsh intended for Craig. The Army fullback ran So yards before ike” Eisenhauer, Navy guard, pulled him down. Bell drove to the 4-yard line but Navy threw Vann for an 11-yard loss and CheSnauSkas missed field goal from the 20-yard line. The game resolved itself into a bitter battle for short yardage until nearly IL minutes of the third quarter had run out. Then, after Navy rallied to stop Army on it’s 16, Fullback Joe Gattuso got off a good, Spiraling punt. Uebel took it on his 20 and set sail down the south sidelines. A three-letter star in basketball and track as we’ll as football, Uebel outmaneuvered the first group of downfield tacklers and outran the rest to go the dis tance and make it 900: Army Blows Another Chance. Just before the final period, which Navy dominated COM pIerely, Army got another scoring chance and blew it. When the Midshipmen were gambling recklessly, Army downed Weaver on fake, tourCn-ooWn punt on his 81 and drove to the 4. where Bell missed q first down by inches. The rest was all Navy and all anti-climatic. The Midshipmen had the ball for all except seven plays in the final quarter. Once they penetrated to the 6-yard line. were thrown back to the 16, and lost the ball when Uebel broke up a fourth-down pass in the end zone. Army kicked out to the Mid Nipmen’s 81 and again Navy ,arged back, Knots at quarter
