Ninth Ranked Bears Bruised Badly, Try To Save Regulars WACO, Tex, Nov. 14.-Underdog University of Houston, shoot ing for a prestige victory, got it with a bruising 37–7 victory over Baylor’s ninth-ranked Bears today. The thrice-be Missouri Valley Conference team scored the first two times it got the ball and Baylor Coach George Sauer played mostly second stringers two thirds of the game. Baylor had a first string tackle, Bob Knowles, and it’s Whizz Kid quarterback, Cotton Davidson, injured in the first quarter. Sauer may have decided not to gamble on any more injuries in a non-conference game. After Don Hargrove scored from the five and Jack Patterson punched over from the two in the first period, Verle Cray kicked a 10-yard field goal and Sam Meeku went 9 yards for a touchdown in the third. Pat terson scored on a l yard plunge and End Ben Wilson scampered 25 yards with a blocked punt in the fourth. Baylor’s only touchdown came on the opening play of the final period when Jerry Coody cli- NAKED 30-yard drive from the one. BEHIND HOME PLATE with a record of three wins and one loss, with Middletown, Williams port and Clear Spring all having one win, one loss and one tie. Boonsboro has yet to win a game, having lost two and tied one. So Although Notre Dame and the University of Maryland coasted to easy victories on Saturday afternoon, the pattern of upsets was more pronounced than ever. The big one, of course, was Wis consin’s amazing BAT win over Illinois, and right behind it came South Cardinals upset of the hitherto unbeaten West Virginia team, by a score of 20–14. Up to Saturdays game, West Virginia had the longest winning streak – thirteen – of any major team in the country. Next on the list was Alabama’s 1876 upset of Georgia Tech, who had only been beaten this year by Notre Dame. Then if that wasn’t enough, Army upended Pennsylvania, who just a week before had put up such a bat tie against Notre Dame. The final upset of the day was Houston’s 37–7 win over Baylor. Getting back to that Alabama game, it will be interesting to see what they can do against Maryland this coming Saturday at College Park. While taking nothing away from Maryland’s win over Mississippi, ] never could see why the experts expected the game to be close, for, in my book, Maryland’s great record this year showed them to be at beast three touchdowns better than the boys from Mississippi. One thing the game did prove, however, and that is that Maryland has a truly great defensive team. Their terrific tackling resulting in Old Miss fumbling no less than times and through the alertness of the Maryland defense, five Mississippi passes were intercepted While fully expecting Jim Tatum’s boys to win on Saturday afternoon, the game will, l believe, be a real test of Maryland’s greatness.
