ON The GRIDIRON. Coburn Wins Hot Game from Rents Hill, 5 10 0. Phi|Iips-Exter, IS; Colby, SHUTS, 10; U. Of Maine, 5. Dartmouth. IS: Bowdoin. g.. Other Colleae and School Games. Waterville. Me. oct 27.-tSpeciaD.- Coburn won one of the hardest fought football games ever played by fitting schools on the college field, Saturday afternoon. Neither side scored il the first half and it looked as if the game would result in 4 tie. But the visitors ger into her plays during the second half. Cuburn actually made three touchdoWns but lost one on 4 tlukc. In TN” first OF the second half she walked the ball to within four yards Of the goal. Wher” she lost il on tumble Then i<ents Hill took il but was unable 10 make any good gain with it. The ball was lost in 4 sCrinmage and q dis putc arose as to whether ii had been captured 10y Coburn or the visitors. COburn claimed that the bail had been fumblcd and that Gushing fell on ii over the line. Rents hin claimed that one of her men i.il on tn, ban nu: that il belonged 10 hcr. The dispute was finally settled by calling it a touchback and the visitors kicked off from the 25-yard line. The visitors showed up very strong in the first half ana made the coburn supporters trcmblc in their boots as hey steadily worked the ball down the field with straight football after the Kickoff. Coburn seemed powerl”ss 10 hold them and a touchdown seemed only question Of time. But Coburn held on her l5-yard line ana turned the tide Of battle coDurn got the east goal on the toss up and kicked TO the 24-yard line. The visitors then started in for straight football and made an average gain. COburn occasionally held or threw them back for small losses but could not get the ball. The plays went against the line mostly and were usually effective. Coburn spoiled the end runs from the start. The ball was taken steadily down to Coburn’s l5-yard line. where she held for downs. 1t was Il splendid brace and started the tide toward vic tory. The Coburn men went into it like bulldogs as soon as they got the bail and rapidly worked il away from their goal Bates took il for seven yards. 4 few plays at the center netted small gains ana an off side play made them q gift of 10 yards. Then Bates went around the end for So yards. 1t looked as ii he was going TO have clear field to the line. but Green. an old COburn player was after him and downed him. but h” was the only man that got near him. \ few short gains We’re made and 1 4 took the ball. They waltZed il back on short gains as during the first of the half But Cohurn didn’t have any in tention of letting il get SO near their goal again, So held much sooner than the first time But she was soon forced 10 try punt and it failed. But She managed 10 get the ball and when time VAS called it was about in the center of the field. Til. pace for this half had been pretty hot and the visitors had the best of il. Coburn had not been nearer than % Yards to their goal while hers had been in great danger. But the cheers from the side lines had as much snap and life as ever and everyone looked for better days. The way the visitors walked the ball down the field by good straight football looked bad for CO. burn. But en- the other hand Coburn had done well when She had the ball. The crowd talked it all over between the halves and the players We’re given some good plain talk by Coach Allen and Coach Haggcrty. If both teams could stand the pace il would be tie game. II was 4 case Of pure grit and endurance and neither team liked the looks Of the fob ahead of them when they faced each other FOR the second half krnt’s Hill kicked off 10 Columns 20 ward line ana she started in with set teeth To do OF die. There was no cvidencc OF weakening and her play was even stronger than in the first halt At times during the second half she rlayed brilliant game. The team work and head work We’re good. While ner superior endurance counted. The visitors began to show signs of weak ness and took the limit of time out as often as they could. But Coburn kept driving them harder and harder ana they way they plunged in and smashed holes made their supporters wild with delight. After the kickoff Coburn made some GOOD gains and then Curtis took the ban for 20 yards Bates followed with , doyen or 50 and Lowe got seven. These plays counted and the goal posts began to look considerably bigger Bates hurdled the heap for live yards and the ball rested on the visitors IA ward line This was where Coburn mad held in the first half, the location being CONTINUED on page 81 Valuable Postage Stamps.
