Gamble Costs Purdue 10 Defeat by Miami MIAMI, Fla, Oct. 13.-There was a good losers attitude today among the Purdue Boilermakers, who gambled and lost a TO foot ball game to Miami last night in just three minutes of play. 1t was Purdue’S ball on its own 80, with fourth down and a foot to go. The game was just two minutes old. but Coach Stu Holcomb electrified the Orange Bowl audience of 51.838 by hustling in orders for Quarterback Dale Sam uels to make the gamble. Samuels sent Jerry Thorpe into the line. Thorpe was smothered, and that was all the opportunity Miami’s Hurricanes needed. After two line plays were halted. Frank Smith. the nimble halfback who beat Purdue last year with two touchdown runs, fed wide to the left and eluded a half-dozen pairs of grasping arms in a 39yard run for the winning score. Elmer fremont converted, and that was it. TITS just one of those things” Holcomb said later. We’ve done it many times before” Purdue tried desperately to make up for its costly venture and Threatened to score several times, but Miami’s line held.
