Not even the chill of Hugh McElhenny’s 100-yard runback of a punt to tie the count at 13-all in the fourth quarter could upset the Trojans’ march to their second Pacific Coast Conference triumph. Coach Jess Hill sent Bukich sub quarterback, in to break the deadlock, in to break the deadlock and he engineered a 75-yard drive to the winning points in five plays three of them his own passes to Frank Clifford and Cutri. Labeled dark horse in the Pacific Coast Conference pennant chase, Southern California walked on Washington 20–13 and brought this praise from losing coach Howie Odell: Greatest team I’ve seen since I came west-and that includes Notre Dame” Even a 100 yard touchdown punt return by Hugh McElhenny to tie the score at 1913 couldn’t quench the use. fire. While the air hissed out of the Washington balloon, Oregon States Beavers rolled to an un- expected 34–6 triumph over Idaho in their conference opener. Stan ford, the only other team to win a conference victory, rolled over Michigan 23–13 to give Far West prestige an unexpected boost.
