Illinois Rated Choice By One touchdown Over Uc|ans Tonight LOS ANGELES, Oct. 13.-Illinois, a preseason candidate to represent the Big Ten in the Rose Bowl football game next New Years Day, engages UCLA, team with no such dreams in the Pa cif1c Coast Conference, in an in tersectional tilt tonight in Memortal Coliseum. The Illinois hopes were dulled in the mud by one point in a 7–6 setback by Wisconsin last Saturday. while the surprising Bruins of UCLA missed out by a similar margin to Washington, 21–20. The Illini rule a firm one-touchdown favorite tonight. Many OBJ servers think it should be larger, and hark back to the Rose Bowl game of 1947 when local UCLA admirers made them the favorites over Illinois and then saw the Midwesterners trample the Bruins by ASIA count. Coach Ray Eliot of Illinois is the only important familiar face back from that 1947 contest. The playing personnel for both squads is new and Henry r. (Red Sanders is now the UCLA coach. The affable Red, incidentally. has quite a record against Big Ten teams. His 1884 Vanderbilt teams defeated Purdue twice. In 1947 Vandy won from Northwest ern, and last year, in his first year at UCLA. he triumphed over Iowa. Most publicized offensive threat for Illinois is 185-pound Johnny Karras. The Illinois crowd admits, however, that Karras, averaging only 3.4 yards a carry, has not yet returned to the 6.5-yard average registered in 1949. AS a decoy, Karras has been most valuable. His companion backs, Dick Raklovits and Sam Piazza, have averaged rs and ia. respectively. The Uclan striking force in cludes several equally dangerous backs such as Howard Hansen. Joe Marvin. Dave Williams, Bob Moore, Johnny Florence or Ted Narleski. The main UCLA weakness is in its line reserve. Illinois presumably has a fast. hard-hitting line, with good reserves, which could spell the difference.
