Maryland Continued From Page B-1. 7. Then, taking a handoff. Mod zewleski passed to Bob Shemonski in the end zone, but the play was called back when officials ruled that ShemonSki’s foot was out of the end zone. Undaunted. Mary land sent ShemonSki skirting his right end and he scored standing UP. Bob Dean converted making his 31st extra point in 40 varsity attempts-and with only six minutes of the second period expended it was TT. Now Maryland was looking the part of the better team. The Terps stopped the Bulldogs cold after the next kickoff, tok punt on their IS, and began to roll again. On six plays, including an incomplete pass on the goal line, they reached Georgia’s 24-yard line with first downs. Rare Play Hats Terps. Here a rare play turned back the Old Liners, who never seemed to recover. Scarbath sent She monski into the end zone and attempted to pass to him. In the scramble to get under the ball, Shemonski was called by the officials for interfering with the defender, Claude Hips, so the ball was taken from Maryland and given to the Bulldogs on their 20-yard line. The Old Liners never again were real threat, but lack of condition. plus the warm weather. may well have exacted more Of toll than Illustration. The only touchdown scored by Georgia without benefit of a Maryland tumble occurred after 7:15 OF the third period and it proved to be all that Coach Wally Butts squad needed. A 15-yard penalty for roughness against the Terps forced Targarona to punt from his l2-yard line. Rocco returned to Maryland’s z and, on the second play, Bilyeu faded far back and scanned a broken field. Obviously he was looking for a receiver far downfield, but he failed to find him so he elected instead, to flip a short, down-themiddle pass to John Duke, a back. 1t looked as if Duke, at best, was an alternate receiver, but the play had the same effect as a screen pass. When he grabbed the ball Duke found a wave of blockers ahead of him and he ran to Maryland’s before Johnny 1dzik, star defensive back, brought him down. Score on Fourth Try. Georgia made three abortive thrusts at the center of the line and remained a yard short. But on fourth down Cock succeeded on a quarterback sneak and it was 14–7. 1t was all Georgia thereafter On the first play of the final period. Shemonski fumbled and Tony Decarlo recovered for Georgia on the Terps’ SO. Six plays later-Brunson’s 19-yard run was the big move-Butts’ warriors had scored again and it was 2o-7 with only $40 Of the quarter gone. Scarbath, who had done all of Maryland’s offensive quarterback ing was replaced late in the final quarter by another sophomore, Bob Destefano, who made an unfortunate debut. A Georgia punt into the end zone gave Maryland the ball on it’s 20-yard line, but Destefano promptly fumbled and Decarlo again recovered, this time on the Terps’ 20. Morocco, Raber Morocco and Raberzn, carrying in that order, moved the ball across in four plays and boosted the score to 27–7. MARYLAND. Left ends-Winsate. Karnash. weiden- Left tackles-Krouse.
