RUTGERS EASY FOR COLUMBIA. THE NEW-YORKERS. WITHOUT THEIR DE BARRED MEN. WIN BY q TO o. NewRrunswick n j. oct. BY a system of offensive play that crashed through the Rutgers line again and again, Columbia’s football eleven recovered some of it’s renown this afternoon. 1t defeated the eleven OF Rutgers College by the score Of u TO O. Columbia, contrary to expectation, was not allowed to play any of its debarred men. and the team sent Nelson Field was one entirely of novIces with the exception of Morley and smythe. The victory was therefore all the more creditable Columbia’s ability lay in the speed and strength Of her attack Time and again the three hacks plunged through the Rutgers line for gains OF I’VE to fifteen yards. The locais elevens line could not stem Columbia’s impetuous onslaught, and. except in a few instances. it became only question OF how often the New-York eleven would push the ball past Rutgers’s goal line. Only five times in the thirty minutes play did the Jerseyites hold Columbia downs. And even then they did not keep the ball long Had Weekes and Berren been with Morley in the back field it is certain that the score would have been many points higher for though Dougherty and Fisher played well. they had not the power of the two debarred Columbia backs Columbia lacked defensive skill. The Rutgers backs found holes often. but nearly always Morley was on the alert to down the runner after yard gain Columbia’s ends were unsked. but this deficiency will be repaired when Van Hoevenberg and probably Henriquez come out to play against Williams, on Saturday. In the second half not until the last five minutes did Rutgers get the ball. and then only to lose II again. Morleys game was fine, his work being more than half the cause OF Columbia’s success His punts excellent. two OF them being Tor sixty yards. Dougherty’s work was good at half back. Rutgers made two gains at the opening of the game Then Columbia got the ball Morley and Fisher made two ive-yard advances; Dougherty followed with hfteen-yard end run. due largely TO Morley’s interference. Steady hammering by Co lumbia’s close formation play on guards and tackles forced slow but continual advancements of from five yards. After eight minutes of this rushing Captain Morley went over the line for a touchdown. In scrimmage Randall received blow the back or his head that Jared his spine and resulted in his retirement. Bruce failed to kick the goal. Seesaw play was succeeded by the best bit of work in the game Morley sent excellent punt Rutgerss flve-yard line. where Smith car ried back the ball five yards before being downed by Wolff. Then. with three minutes to play, Co umbia’s line held firmly and she gained the ball on downs. Dougherty and Fisher each made five yards the later scoring the second touchdown. Bruce again missed the goal. A minutes work in the second half sufficient to give Dougherty touchdown. Long dashes by the three Morningside backs resulted in another score by Fisher. after which Bruce kicked goal Columbia then had Rutgers at her mercy, and tore through teams line. with the result that Shaw made Columbias fifth touchdown in a few moments. The game ended with the ball on Rutgerss thirty-fveyard line Lineup:
